Clutch Fork Advice

i got my tranny in and i dont have any clutch pedal. its hard as a rock and we looked under it and the slave cylinder is trying to push away from the bell housing...... so what i wanted to know is if i had put the clutch fork in wrong..... i put it in so that the slave cylinder would fit in side of it. someone told me that it needs to be flipped around so that it just rests against..... not goes into it.
