quadna71 fwiw...the stock units on a tj seem to work fine for me. i swapped the OEM lamp in them for a pair of sylvania silverstars and also pulled the light defuser out at the same time. even white glow now with better side displacement. they are a fog as the light isn't directed in any certain direction other than foward. at night the difference is incredible and i can see the ditches clearly.

however i don't think they couldn't do anything if you had a vehicle that was lifted and had headlights that high, but those are the laws....fantastic!

jeepmutt If you have an in at Hella, get a couple sets. Mount on the windshield and the bumper. I have lights on the windshield and they come in handy on camp and logging roads, especially when you leave late on Fri after work. They also have been welcome on a snowy trail in the dark after extracting a stuck Durango. However, don't use them on public roads. I flipped them on 1/2 mile from home late one night in the fog having narrowly missed both a skunk and a deer, and I got pulled over in my own driveway by the only other vehicle out there... County patrol hiding off the road waiting for an evildoer like myself. Aftermarket lamps above the level of the headlights is not allowed.

Gerg Hella Black Magic are good lights. I run Hella's on my motorcycle (and soon on the TJ). Most of the Hella line come with either the fog or long range beam. If you get the fog they are usually legal to use anytime.

Fog works best for off road (my opinion) due to spreading light very wide and close. Pencil beams (or any of the long range lights) are for high speed running. You need to see way out there so you don't hit something. I ran the long range Hella 500s and swapped them for the fogs. Couldn't be happier.

willness33 Free is good, but I would stick with mounting them on the bumper. Most states have laws (stating something to the effect of) lights mounted above the headlights are illegal. Tons of people run them mounted on the hood or windshield frame without any problems, but it only takes one cop having a bad day to give you a hard time. Also, give other drivers a break on-road. Make sure your lights are not going to blind oncoming traffic.

1BLKJP I don't know about those lights in particular, but FREE makes even a marginal product that much better.
