they did but they are computer controlled, completely.
its a huge step down to go carb'd on a 4.0.
but, you can. get an offenhauser intake and a 1.23 or 1.14 mc2100/2150 carb and it will run fine. a buddy did his 93 yj last year.
the 4.2 head will bolt to the 4.0 but the copmression will be very low

I would also imagine that in order to convert the 4.0 to a 4.2L intake (a very morally unjust action- just buy a damn 4.2 and give the 4.0 to someone who wants/needs it) you are going to have to tear out a lot of sensors that have a part in controlling the ignition systems- basically you're looking at messing with a lot of the wiring harness just to get your carb'd 4.0 to run properly seeing as how the ignition system is completely computer controlled and relies on those sensors.
Did the YJ 4.0's come with a distributor setup? I know the TJ's switched to a direct igniter setup over the older distributor setup, which means that it's basically not possible..

I saw plenty of hills over there
Espesialy in scotland where I lived for a year and half.
But also saw them in england and all over wales!
I am in missouri now but have to travel 120 miles to nearest offroad park and most of the better ones are 150 to 250 miles!

|Xpress||WHY would he want to do that? There goes EVERYTHING that makes the 4.0L the desired engine with power output and reliability. It's incredibly stupid. Every bit of good MPG it has is going out the window.|

|khende||The 4.2 carb is run by a computer and it a piece of crap. It sounds to me that you want a mechanical carb. I have not researched this but there has to be a better solution than the 4.2 carb. I think that you are barking up the wrong tree.|

Hills in England........Where? Please tell me so I can go play on it. I doubt this jeep will see much trail and V-8's are a bit more rare over here. I could sell my 350 for £2000 easy over here.
I'll let him know about the head swap option.

i understand that part, but then just go carbed old school v8 then. but the stupid thing is a carbed v8 in normal form puts out what, 150-175 hp usually. the old 304 v8 was even less. and carbing the 4.0 is just a weird idea. who makes a carb to do it? i know you can put a 4.0 head on a 4.2 to gain the fuel injection, maybe he'd have to swap the 4.2 head on the 4.0 block.
the one i'm building will be very mechanical, but i'm not giving up the fuel injection. oh yeah, carbs are not very good on trails w/ steep angles.

I have a friend over here that has a 4.0L and he would like to remove the fuel injection and put on the fuel and ignition systems from a 4.2L. I've tried to talk him out of it but it ain't happenin. I have to ask you all because I've never had or worked on a 4.2L and my jeep didn't have a 4.0L in it for very long so I don't know much about them either. So...
Is it possible to take the 4.2L fuel system and ignition system and bolt up to a 4.0L?
