Jerry Bransford That is the axle vent hose, it connects to the axle's barbed vent connector on top of the axle. Its job is to keep water from entering the axle through the vent opening. The vent opening is on top of a small steel block that has brake lines passing through it that is on top of the axle tube.

I'm tightening the hose clamp on that hose where it attaches in the below photo.
