im selling a 95 yj 2.5 strong motor 33inch BFG tires.frame and body just redone no rust runs strong i bought a 98 with 4.0 the.selling the 95 has new int and z bart frame is automatic i rebuilt trans twice my suggest 5speed to be an awsome jeep have 3inch bds suspention to go with it email me i can give pics and my #workfishbeach@gmail.com

Nubby55 I got a Wrecking Yard engine, 1997 4.0 with 87,000 for my stroker motor and when I broke it down it was in great cond. only paid $400. cash. It will cost you 1,200 to 1,500 to "REBUILD' one right and that's with you doing the work.
If the price is right, get the good body and find a Good, Low mileage engine that you can tell was taken care of and stick it in there

phearbofh is it worth buying both to make one.. I know I have 2 to make one. if you can hve one with alot of useable spare parts i say get both.

stykthyn I would pass on both jeeps and keep looking. The one that has bad rings needs a new engine. by the time you rebuild you are going to be in at least 5-600 maybe more depending on your skill level. For a 93 to be in rough shape I am assuming it has rust issues which will likely cost more than replacing the engine in the other jeep. If this is going to be a daily you want something that has minimal issues. keep looking there are plenty of other jeeps out there. I also second the 6 cylinder for hwy driving. I have the 4 and I can hit 75 but its out of juice and if I have to pass or go up a hill I find myself having to downshift sometimes to 3rd gear.

89quest Do you have any friends that have some mechanical know how? At some point you'll need an extra set of hands anyway. You might want to read here on the forum about the 2.5L 4 cylinder and its power, if you are going to use it as a dd, if you do alot of highway driving. I know if I had it to do again I would get a six cylinder. My opinion ONLY. Good luck and dont forget to check the frame for rust.

roadyrob when I had my motor rebuilt I just dropped the jeep off and they did everything. the 2,800 included extras like balancing, hotter cam, ported head. you can probably pick up a remanufactured 4 cyl for less than 1,000 plus install.
the 4 cyl. would be an easy engine to swap if you want to try it yourself.

OregonPlinker YJ's are super easy to work on. I think it would be a great rig to get your feet wet if your into that sort of thing. Depending on how much they want for each jeep and whether or not you want to start a collection you might just consider holding out for a nice one that already runs good. I know if I bought 2 jeeps for an engine swap I would end up keeping them both and my wife would not be happy...lol

Both cars are 4 cyl. When you paid $2800 did you have to find an engine or did you drop it off at a shop and they did everything? How difficult would it be for me to swap the engines myself? (PS I'd have to learn from scratch)

roadyrob you don't say if its a 4 cyl or a 6. swapping a 93 to a 95 is a bolt in swap IF they are the same size. prices for a shop to do it vary, ask a local mech.
as to a rebuild, I paid $2800.00 for a 4.2. that included remove and replace, bored 20 over, balanced, hotter cam and ported head.

Hmm $400 seems kind of low for a rebuild job. My first suggestion is to get from that shop an exact rebuild procedure that they intend to perform. How many miles are on the engine and what symptoms does the engine give you that it needs engine work? If it has problems holding compression, I would suggest staying away from that Jeep entirely.

The problem is mainly that when you start diggin into the engine like that, depending on what tolerances they use, you could wind up replacing a whole lot more, "can-of-worms" theory. It could be just a ring-job, but if the piston is out of round or the ring grooves too wide then well... you get the idea.

I'm on the verge of possibly buying a 95 Wrangler that the owner tells me needs a "ring job." He says he has had a couple mechanics tell him that this is a $400-$600 job. The engine is already from a junkyard that he used to replace the previous one with. I'm pretty skeptical.

After doing some research, I see that a ring job might mean that the engine needs to be rebuilt. I dont want a quick fix here as I want this Jeep to be my everyday driver. How much could a rebuild set me back?
