Bgtklbx You have a clutch problem more than likely. Not hydraulic. Open the bleeder valve on the slave cylinder and press on the clutch pedal. If it drops to the floor smoothly you just eliminated part of the system. Then remove the slave and press down. The plunger should move out and then back in when the pedal is up. With the bleeder valve closed. If it does you have an internal clutch problem. Time for a new clutch assembly.

K.wag Having just finished my clutch replacement 20 min ago, I second the throw out bearing. its a very fragile piece of the clutch system, most other parts are pretty solid. Just pray to god you didnt break the main drive retainer.
I agree with pulling the slave and checking functionality. It is two quick bolts and could save time.

juan_p__m I would pull the slave, ask someone to press the clutch, see if there is any action from the slave, if it checks out, start removing that trans, and rockauto for that clutch. $700, I'm jelous! Good luck!

Only until the pushrod is fully extended. There is no back pressure to push the rod back into the slave cylinder

Full Spool Don't stand on it to try and get it to work, You'll run a chance of ruining the slave cylinder, or master cylinder too.
Replace the clutch.

Water Dog X2 on the throwout bearing or pressure plate. If it was hydraulic, you could push the pedal.

tallzdatank sounds like a throw out bearing. I'd just get a whole clutch kit. since your already there might as well send 5 more minutes to replace the clutch with it.

Crash98 I haven't had time to mess with it yet, all I know is its super hard to push the pedal down to the floor. I have to stand on it and put all my weight in it to move it. I know its not engaging the clutch at all. I wasn't sure if it was a hydraulic issue or a clutch issue. Don't know we're to start looking. Looking forward to get it going after the holidays. This is my second wrangler, it was to good of a deal to pass on it.

rjpark36 Sorry, did you say $700? That's a hell of a find! Can you give some more details?

I'm not sure about the clutch, although throw out bearing seems reasonable. I think the Luk kit is what many recommend for a rebuild - I'm probably going to have to do mine here in the near future. Good luck!

K.wag right to the floor sounds like a hydraulic issue. Popping noise could be a blown hydraulic hose?
My throw-out bearing shattered and the clutch just ceased to do anything, it still had pressure.

trivium646 Same thing happened to my 97 last year, minus the pop noise. If i remember correctly, my throwout bearing got stuck and locked the pressure plates.

Need help, clutch problems

I just bought a 98 Tj for $700. The guy I bought it from said the clutch made a popping noise then went right to the floor and did not work anymore. Can someone tell me if this sounds like a slave cylinder problem or something else.
