UFOtestpilot Having cleaned it up a bit, I now see that it appears to be manufactured that way, almost like a forging mark. Anyhow, thank you for the response and input. I got it back together but decided that with the rain setting in for the evening I'd wait until tomorrow to do the other side. Kind of sucks that I lacked the funds to just do the ball joints while I was in there now, but things are what they are so back in I'll go in a couple weeks.

I have several maintenance items to do before I'm satisfied that the vehicle is in solid order. I will have some questions before I do the propeller shaft u-joints though, but that is a ways down the road.

DevilDogDoc Ok then if you are talking about the hub end of the shaft I don't see any wear at all, there is nothing to rub there as the hub supports that end of the shaft so there is no where under normal circumstances for that to be rubbing on anything....Its just rusty and nasty. I would wire brush all that off and paint it since you have it apart.

UFOtestpilot Ok, I have four pics total. The first two show what I'm talking about. It would be on the shaft where the rust is. If it were in the tube it would be at the outermost end. If I try to describe it any more I'll have to start using words like doohickey and thingy, which I'd like to avoid if I can.

DevilDogDoc Im still not seeing anything. Do you mean in your second pic next to where the shaft goes into the side gears? Or do you mean the first pic?

lol, I just figured out they weren't gears as I looked at the mating surface.

The "worn" spot is possibly not a "worn" spot but I wouldn't know because this is the first time I've looked at the axle shaft from this type of axle. It's in the pic above where the rust is. There's the section next to the tone rings where the shaft diameter is noticeably smaller than the rest. It's because that area has the rust on it that had me even questioning this.

Again, sorry for the n00bish questions. At least I'll only ask each one once!

DevilDogDoc The gears that you are referencing are not gears, they are the tone rings for your ABS. Clean it up but dont grease it. Now what 'worn" area are you talking about?

UFOtestpilot I think I'll go get a tub of wheel bearing grease while I wait for someone more skilled than I to reply.

Changing out u-joints @ axle, questions...

Ok, so this is the first time I've seen a straight axle shaft from a 4x4, or really any vehicle in at least 20 years, so please forgive my ignorance.

First thing is whether or not the pitted and "worn" looking section of the shaft near the hub is "normal" or if it's a problem where something is wearing wrong?





Secondly, should I clean up the gears on the hub side and regrease with some marine grease or ???





I will be pulling this stuff back out in a couple weeks and doing new ball joints, but if I can get some advice/insight today before I do anything unnecessarily stupid I would be most grateful.
