Older iPod with 730n

I have an older iPod I'd like to use in my sahara 730n. I mostly use my iPhone for music but my older iPod with thousands of songs on it would be perfect to store in my center console and play music off of. Only problem is the 730n won't recognize it. Might be cause its an older iPod? Anyone else have this problem? O have any ideas to make it work other than connecting a aux cable to the 730n from the iPod. I'd like to just keep the iPod out of sight and constantly hooked up to power and stored in the center console.
