i82much Go out in the field with the Army at Hohenfels, GE sometime. They actually set up a battalion motorpool in the field to deal with all the broken humvees. I seriously doubt things were any different back in the day with the old jeeps.

Remember you are usually convoying with other vehicles when you are on a mission, every other vehicle had a winch when I was in. And, at least now, there are dedicated recovery vehicles to come get you if you get stuck.

traitor08 There was nothing really special about them.
Unless you look into the pto transfer case and the implement they could use.

They were small, 4wd, light, low geared, easily fixed, and an extremely bad ride. And no they didnt have posi or lsd or bld or anything.

I know I am going to get some bad mouthing from this, but the closest thing to the size and handling as the original jeeps is the samurai.

sneck yeah the new jeeps suck, I would avoid them. thats why theres such an avid community behind them. go by a cj if you want to offroad, the yj's, tj's, and jk's are all just pavement queens lol

They were not unstoppable. There was huge support for jeeps during the war and something major had to be done to almost every one every day (replace axle, tranny, etcetera). It was all about having huge numbers of equipment and men to keep it running.

Rude Robert Wow I read the first one, i have to go to work, but were they like posi traction, or basically the same a s stock jeep today? I will read the the second one, tomorrow, but i was tryinig to look for like something saying that how did they compare off road thx

MikeK46 It had a 3-speed + reverse T-84 manual transmission and a 2-speed Dana 18 transfer case.

Rude Robert I drove a jeep the last year of my army post. I knew it worked great, but I didn't know anything about 4x4's of any kind... still don't either lol

Just a curious ? I wonder if the old 4x4 system is better then the stock jeep of today??
