4.0's are a little more 'turn key" so to speak than the 2.5 because running bigger tires it helps having more torque. But ,if you love to tinker and do use it more for off road the 2.5 is pretty amazing. I look at my Jeep as a portable generator/stereo/tool chest,,,I have 2 optima hooked up to a 136amp alternator and I can run pretty much anything with an aux battery. Shit,,,,, I can make coffee, refrigerate my drinks, run a wench, have 10 lights on, and hook up anything that requires power. I can even run a solar panel to charge the aux battery. I can run all the stuff you can pretty much imagine.
I am obsessed with getting every little bit of power in my 2.5l and I love working on them, I have a rocket ship already with my new Acura but I get more head turns with the Jeepster. Having a convertible is pretty sick too. lol
My rule of thumb is condition....I will buy anything that has most of its life still left.

Depends on the "type" of young person you are...not trying to be rude,but wranglers are not race cars...and im not saying you are that type...but alot of young ppl tend to want to drive fast..you know the little hondas and toyotas and so forth..
my wrangler is not lifted...does have slightly bigger tires(235 75 15)..but she corners like a garbage truck lol...
Make sure to look it over frame body etc..for rust,that seems to be the biggest problem..test drive it,listen for ticks,knocks anything out of the ordinary...
As far as reliability goes..keep in mind yj's (87-95)are getting up there in age...so things are going to start wearing out and breaking..
Mine is a 95 I6 5 speed manual...fuel injected...I've heard that they are a little better in the fuel consumption department..it has 230k klicks on it which is around 140k miles...still runs like a champ..
The yj's are NOT comfort vehicles either...bumpy stiff suspension...but fun as hell to drive..I dont think yj's came with anti-lock brakes either..but to be honest,if you drive it like a jeep then you wont need them...
I aint trying to dissuade you from buying one...just letting you know my experiences with mine...
Jeeps are like the opera...youll either love it or hate it lol

looking at buy a wrangler, have questions
my names allen and im 17, and looking for my first car andim thinking of buying a wrangler. im doing some research and looking for honest opinions on the jeep wrangler. my overall question is would a jeep wrangler be good for me? i wouldnt be it year round, mostly just during spring and summer. i need it last me awhile and through college and i need it to be reliable. to that i ask, are there any major problems that often occur with wranglers? anything that is a major problem with it? im looking at gettin a 1990's yj or early tj. also, the 4 cyl vs the cyl. are there any problems with the 4 cyl or reasons not to get a 4 cyl? does a 4 cyl make it better on gas? when looking at a wrangler, what major things should i look for?
i also need to convince my dad that a wrangler would be good. anyone have any reasons that can help me convince him ?
