My first antenna length adjustment from its mid-adjustment point is fairly coarse to see if that direction makes the SWR better or worse. Once I get the SWR moving in the right direction, downward of course, my adjustments become pretty fine... like a half-turn of the antenna's length adjustment screw (only some use that method) or so at a time. It's not too difficult to pass the point of minimum SWR, so turning the knob too far at a time can cause you to miss the minimum SWR point.
And depending on the type of antenna you have, it may have a vinyl tip cap which significantly affects the SWR when you replace the cap. In other words, if you have the antenna set for minimum SWR with the cap off, it will no longer be at minimum SWR with the tip cap on. When you have a tip cap, you have to adjust it to one side of the lowest possible SWR & see if installing the cap brings the SWR back down. If the cap makes the SWR worse, you have to remove it & readjust the antenna's length to the other side of minimum SWR. Then see what happens when you replace the cap.
You can set it so you can get the SWR to the same low point with the cap on as you did with the cap off, you just have to compensate for the cap's presence by slightly detuning the antenna slightly to one side of lowest SWR. Make sense?

I took the day off tomorrow so I'm going to try to play with it again, I'll try what you said. When I'm doing the adjusting on the antenna itself, is it supposed to be miniscule adjustments to the screw or does it usually take a significant amount of turning to move the meter..?|

First, an inexpensive <$20 SWR meter would have literally done just as good of a job in helping to tune your antenna as the HP201 would... and you certainly don't need the other power scales that one offers. In the case of a CB, the most basic SWR meter is more than good enough and will allow you to set your SWR/tune your antenna just as well as the most expensive lab Bird SWR meter can. Really.
Connect the meter to the CB and antenna, make sure they connect to the right jacks on the back of the SWR meter. The meter does not need 12v to work, 12v is only to light up its meter for night use. The CB's transmitted power provides all the power that is needed to make the SWR meter work.
Tune the CB to channel 20 which is at the mid-band point. If the antenna is tuned for minimum SWR at channel 20, it will be as good as it's going to get on channels 1 & 40.
Make sure the CB is in its normal AM mode if your CB also has a SSB mode. It won't register any power output if it's in SSB mode unless you are talking into the microphone. Just make sure it's in AM if it also has the SSB mode.
Set the meter to DIR, press the transmit key & hold it in transmit mode. Rotate the SET knob until the meter reads exactly full scale with the needle on the far-right 1K line. Release the transmit key. Switch the meter to REF & press the transmit button, the meter should be indicating a hopefully low reading, that is your SWR... the lower the indication the better.
Just adjust the antenna length so the SWR is at its lowest possible point.

|TalkIsJeep||Thanks again for the replies guys! Still stumped though.. Previously I had the power coming from an indirect source and thought it was possible the wires I was spliced into weren't giving off enough power to transmit, throwing off the SWR. So I hooked up directly to the battery, still absolutely nothing. The only thing that makes the needle jump is putting it to a wattage setting and keying up. The knob with the numbers (1-9) doesn't do anything under any setting, keying up or not. Looooost. I think I'm going to post in my local and see if I can get someone to school me in CBs in person hahaha|

|trucklite80||You use the DIR to set the SWR's. And use the REF for your reading. The 5w 50w etc. are for measuring the power output of your radio once the SWR's are set. You will need the 5W setting for that radio unless you had it "jacked up" by a radio shop. Your SWR reading should be the same on Ch. 1 and Ch. 40 and it should read 1.5 or less on Ch 20. |KG_Strummer||Hmmm, possible, but not likely. Are the jacks on the back labeled? I've seen folks get the wires reversed, which could cause no movement on the meter. Also, try moving the "Set" dial all the way to the right if you are sure your cables are in the correct place.|

Hook up your antenna to the port labeled for it, and hook up your pigtail from the radio to the port labeled for it. Switch to Channel 1 on your radio, set your dial to REF, key up your mic and then turn your set dial until it reads infinity (looks like the sideways 8 on the far right side of the meter).
Then I guess you would switch to 5W and look for the SWR. If not, try the DIR setting. However, I would bet it's the 5W that you're looking for.

I need help with my SWR meter..
This is my first time using an SWR meter and I'm extremely new to CBs. Figured I'd spring an extra few bucks for an SWR meter that was slightly above the rest I was looking at, thinking it'd make my life easier. The Workman HP201S. Welp, came with no instructions whatsoever, and every other write up I see for SWR meters on here seems to involve settings or switches that this either doesn't have, or has labeled differently. Just my luck..I'm attaching a picture of the SWR gauges and tuners, and for reference I'm using a Cobra 19 dx IV CB with a 5' Firestik with a tunable tip. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I live about 1.5 miles from a big truck stop and barely get the occasional garbled noise..
