My guess is that they want to get paid extra for something they have to do anyway. That strategy works great when customers are clueless. And shops like to pocket extra money when there is overlap in multiple jobs. Like charging for labor to install a new belt when replacing a water pump. Putting a new belt on is no different than putting the old belt back on.

herbster Have to take pan off either way, so my guess is that they thought break the bill into two parts to make it sound better than 700. lol. Rear seal price isnt bad, but that pan gasket seems high.

tangofox007 What engine?

If you have a 4.0L, it's a lot like changing your socks with your shoes on. You cannot replace the rear main seal without removing the oil pan. So maybe you should just opt for the RMS job and beat them at their own game. The oil pan gasket is a 100% lesser included offense if the RMS is being replaced.

Oil Leak

Had my 03 TJ in for service at Big O and they told me I had 2 small oil leaks. The main rear seal and the pan gasket. They wanted $347 to repair the rear seal and $327 to repair the pan gasket.

My question is if they repair the rear seal isn't it real easy to do the pan gasket ??
