nmdriver Figured it out!
Bad driveshaft. The cv joint on the driveshaft with the torn boot and gears jumping apparently. Thanks all for the help. Luckily I found one on craigslist for $40. Lots of used ones out there.

nmdriver The wooden rail road ties would be used to support the machine so it will not be on solely jackstands. Does that make sense? If not let me know and I can draw a picture.

When I replied on the 13th I mentioned pulling the rear tires off so, therefore, the vehicle would not be able to drive off since there would be zero tires affixed to the vehicle.

I do see the concern with the high center of gravity and small bases.

What do RR ties have to do with anything? LOL

I was concerned because if the front wheels are on the ground, engine running, in 4WD, and in gear, your Jeep could drive off the rear jack stands.

WatchThis! Sounds like the front carrier bearing to me. It is something to check at least.

dominic1978 I reciently was hearing a noise in what seemed to be the drivers front suspesnion. I could feel a clunk in the floor upon take off and breaking and some times during a turn from take off. A friend helped me to diag. that the rear track bar where it mounts to the frame was binding. The noise must have been traveling through the frame rail. We loosened the bolt under load and then re-tightened.

nmdriver Appears to be transfer case, everything has checked out.

I am going to jack up the rear and pull the tires put in 4x4 and let idle and see if I can heaer something in the transfer case.

nmdriver Buddy is coming over tomorrow to help me spin the axles and listen but after jacking up and taking off the tires, I cannot find anything wrong with the hubs.

It does sound like it is coming from the front diff so my question is...if the noise is only apparent in 4x4 then if the diff was bad, wouldn't it make noise at all times not just in 4x?

nmdriver Thanks all, it appears it may be the hub. I am going to jack up this weekend and perform the tests described by that timken pdf.

The front axle has a little backlash but nothing like that video. Also, the u joints are all tight and are not egged out.

It looks like this may not be too hard of a job if it is the hub...

Fairly easy to replace. Move brake caliper out of the way, pull off rotor, remove axle nut (use an impact wrench), remove the three bolts that hold the hub to the steering knuckle.

nmdriver How would I know if it is the hub that has failed and how hard are those to replace?

kjeeper10 Get the tire off the ground. grab the joint and turn the tire. You should feel or see movement. Do the same with the tire fully turned.
I think a bad unit bearing will show signs similar to balljoints.

nmdriver Just look for play within? I looked at the axle u joints and they appeard ok...for some reason I think it is the hub(s). Not sure why.

Front End Noise Help

Hi, I have a 08 JKU with 35's with 144k miles and recently I am hearing a noise in what appears to be my front end.

Driving straight in 4 hi I can hear kind of a thunking and when I turn it goes into a knocking thumping sound. Not your typical noise by using 4x4 on pavement but a crunching and awful noise. Only does this in 4x4, not 4x2.

I am thinking either:
U joint from front driveshaft to diff
U joint(s) from axle shafts to hub
or
hub

Where should I start to investigate other then my wife driving and me laying on the hood trying to figure out what is making noise while trying to not get run over?
