|vortec||New here but big jeep fan. Just bought a 2000 TJ and im having a little different problem. It will run very good in park and neutral but as soon as i put it in reverse or drive it will stumble like its starving for fuel then it will stall, It will start back up fine. The fuel pressure is fine . I'm an experienced technician and it boggles me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.|

My bet is you at least have a bad upstream 02 sensor which can cause all kinds of strange problems, especially at idle RPMs.
Your transmission is the 32RH which is a very (!) good transmission. Check that its ATF level is up where it should be. Warm the engine up fully, shift the transmission through the gears while you're parked, then shift into Neutral (must be Neutral). After setting the parking brake, check the transmission's ATF level to make sure it's not low. If it's low, add ATF+4 to bring it up to level... NO OTHER ATF besides ATF+4 can be used in it. Also make sure the ATF is a nice clear red color and doesn't smell burnt.

|AlexS||I would say you do have a transmission problem. On my last car that was an automatic, one day it just wouldn't start off from a start very well. It got to the point where i had to manually shift the automatic (1-2-D) to get it to work. Limped it to a family friend's shop and had to have the transmission completely rebuilt.|

|Whitfimb||Sounds like you have a handful of things going on at once (Erratic idle / Miss fire / Trans). Fill out your location and maybe someone here local to you and give some sound first hand advice. Also, Local Jeep / 4wd clubs bring together like minded folks who are usually very knowledgeable themselves about repairs. They also keep up with who locally is the top repair guy for getting the most bang for your buck. Otherwise, If you are comfortable turning your own wrenches for repair then I'm sure many here can answer just about any question you have.|

The other problem I forgot to mention was that every time I start the car in the morning the car doesn't shift correctly. When I get to the first stop light by my house the car does not want to go and just revs. I almost feels like I'm in neutral. It always takes a few seconds before the car catches and jerks into the right gear. The thought was that the car was starting in 3rd, which would explain the neutral jerk and the stalling. But after warming up the problem never shows up again.
When I asked about a transmission flush he did warn me that there was a small chance of killing the transmission. Again any advise would be welcomed.

|chilly||The erratic idle kind of made me think vacuum leak maybe (?), others, keep me honest here...beyond that, I wholeheartedly agree with the consensus above- check the spark plugs & cap & rotor, wires if you have a distributor- shortly after I got mine I got a cylinder misfire CEL, replaced the plugs & it runs like a champ (actually when I got a look at the old plugs I was shocked it even ran at all).|

|Wattapunk||Hmm. You may reconsider your friendship with your mechanic buddy. Don't know how he came up with a faulty transmission given your symptoms and code. Do like others suggested, do a complete tuneup such as spark plugs/wires, distributor cap, rotor, even run some fuel injector cleaner.|

Since you just got it, I would give it time to get to know it. They are very easy to work on, and if mechanically inclined, VERY easy to work on.
Spend some time checking out the usual replace items. Plugs, wires, fluids. Try to get a benchmark on how old these items are and systematically start to replace them. Eventually you will be able to rule out culprits based on what you have done already.
As for you immediate situation, I'd go with a reputable shop, not necessarily a 4x4 shop. I use a 4x4 shop for suspension and driveline stuff from the transfer case back (transfer case, driveshafts, differentials and out to the wheels. They see more 4x4's and might have insight on why something is wearing wrong or out of alignment, or not working with other parts of the Jeep because of lifts or aftermarket add-ons.
Everything else, electrical, motor, trans, ect. I find a shop that is best suited for the potential repair. Good luck and trust me, given time, you will get to know this jeep like no other vehicle you have ever owned, and find your self tackling more and more and using shops less and less.

dosent seem like the trans would couse the jeep to stall.
Old plugs could cause the miss fire and a stall.

Since you recently bought it, and who knows how old the spark plugs are/or spark plug wires. I think I would replace them. May not be the solve to the problem, but would be a cheaper way to start chasing the problem.
I would also clean the throttle body and its sensors with Throttle body cleaner.

Repair advice needed
I recently bought a 2001 Jeep sport with 145000 miles. Initially it was leaking oil, needed new gaskets, etc. Not a big problem for the age and miles. When I bought it a few weeks ago it was still warm outside. In the last few weeks with the drop in temperature my jeep has been acting up. When I start it in the mornings the ide runs strangely. It stays below 1000 but then drops and then comes back up. Then a few block away from my house, about every other day, the engine will just stall out (it's an automatic).
Took it to a good friend who owns a shop and he told me its the transmission and it needs either a new one or a rebuild. Local shop he uses can do it for $1200.
Ok decided to wait until next month. Then today my check engine light comes on and went to a auto parts store for a code check and I have "random misfire" p0300.
Reading this forum (maybe a little too much) I decided to make an appointment at a local 4 wheel specialist shop to see what they could do and to see if anything else was wrong. They want $200 to do the full inspection but I won't be able to get an appointment for two weeks. They also quoted me $2500 for the transmission rebuild if I needed it.
I guess the question is what should I do? Wait for the 4x4 shop to do the inspection and get the second opinion. Just get the rebuild. Get the code fixed, or try to sell it and buy another one later. I guess there is no right answer but just some opinions would give me some comfort.
