KontrolFreak Hi Everyone, As noted, Smith Point is open, but only for two miles. Sandy destroyed Burma Rd, flattened dunes and took away treeline, wheel the ocean side only. And then there's the stupid birds. Piping Plover nesting ruining the whole experience. Gets crowded on weekends. Head out early.
Cupsogue is also open, but only for about 150 yds past the campground. You can park and walk over the now-filled-in new inlet. Not worth the drive. Also for the birds...:-/

jkemt You can also purchase the county permit at Indian island campground in riverhead

jayhermz I was there on saturday night at like 10pm and you had to sort of drive on the dunes in order to get down to the other end of the beach at sore thumb. Its easy to get lost!

My friend just picked up a 2001 cherokee and he won't be able to get a beach pass either..
06-19-2013 09:31 AM
88irocz Yea I'm pretty sure you have to wait till labor day to get the pass again. Just want to say, I was only asked to show my permit once. I was there during the week and only a few people were there but somebody called the cops saying two wranglers were driving on the dunes. I happened to be there with a wrangler buddy and the officer obviously thought it was us even though it wasn't(possibly a jealous hummer owner). He asked us to show our permits and that was all. Funny, on weekends I see tons of people driving on the dunes...this is at sore thumb by the way.

Animal67 Smiths point is open not for the trails but to drive up on the beach. It's the Suffolk county permit. I know for sure you can buy it at smiths point and the west Sayville country club. The pass opens up a few beaches and will run you about $95 plus a green key if you don't have one yet. The window to buy the state permit ( sore thumb, democrat point, etc) is over it ended sometime in April or may.

redbullrr I went down to Smith Point to try and get my permit. They are shut down. Any place else to get said permit so I can hit up Mantuak and other spots?
05-08-2013 11:01 PM
Animal67 There's talk of Gilgo being open late in the season. Smiths point is highly unlikely.

Animal67 I work in a hotel where alot of the reconstruction personnel are staying I'll keep my ear to ground for any updates on smiths point.

For the Suffolk county permit you must first purchase a green key before you can get the permit. Permits are available now.
Sorry to just post links but these should answer all your questions.

As far as smiths point goes I have been speaking to some of the reconstruction/disaster personnel and there are multiple breaches apparently its doing damage (more) to the inlet Sotheby's are gonna repair it don't know when. Anyway they said it will be opened but it looks like with limited access/range
Not very promising. I usually get the Suffolk permit. I was thinking about getting the state permit this year but after seeing Moses and most of ocean parkway today I'm just going to wait for something to open before I buy a permit

BahBahBlackJeep I'm surprised to hear about Cedar and Sore Thumb being open, I just passed by there the other day and the opening just past Oak Beach looked closed; as in, there were barricades up. Are you guys accessing these beaches from a different location? Or am I just confusing beaches? Thanks
02-25-2013 08:24 PM
Tommo Beaches will be open April first. Can't wait to hit sore thumb!!!!!

Beach-Bum I will talk to everyone Friday about volunteering at smiths point. I called Suffolk County Parks dept today and spoke to the supervisors assistant. Waiting to hear back from the supervisor to see if there's anything we can do to help if anyone is interested. This will probably be set up for March.

Beach-Bum Smiths point is closed and in really rough shape. It's going to take a lot of work to get open this summer. I'm going to see if they need volunteers
