Mikel01 I was coating my winch cable today and had the jeep idling for a while and noticed a great deal of heat being vented by the AEV hood.
03-13-2014 08:07 AM
MOABLTY And here is a shot of the underside of the non vented AEV hood, as it comes on the MW3, Moab, and Polar editions.

MOABLTY Here is the underside of the Rubi X hood. As you can tell, no air vents, just water drains.
03-13-2014 07:04 AM
jwilson2598 I know of a couple people who have modded the vents to be more functional like the AEV ones.

No, I don't believe the Rubi (Power Dome) hood is vented at all. The vents are for looks. There's a small hole on each side, but that seems to only be there to allow rainwater to drain bad not pool up on top.

Mopar2Ya Just to be clear there is no bird bath on the AEV vented hood.
A pic w/the pixeldecals.com treatment.
03-12-2014 08:50 PM
MOABLTY You know? I am not sure about that. I just like the rubi x hood a lot. I have the AEV hood right now, the one without the vents that comes with the Moab and MW3, and Polar editions. And I hate the bird bath. Was thinking about upgrading. But right now I'm about 7K in upgrades and the wife is wondering. Baaaaaaaad..... So I gotta take it easy for a while....

The rubi hood comes unpainted at $600. I have a hookup in local body shop and was told I can get it for that amount. That includes the two plastic vents on top. They are $50 a piece, and sold separately. I always liked the utilitarian look of the truck lined body panels.

MOABLTY I would get a 10th anniversary rubicon hood, stock primed. Then I would line it with a truck bed liner and put in the hood vents. The same treatment to the grille.

My next project.....

The AEV hood is nice but painted from Quadratec is a bucket of dollar$. The stock rubi X hood is just $600 from the dealer.

AndrewsJeep Picking mine up on Friday! Thanks guy whom cut three cables.......OT

PRWhitby Mine was not pre-painted. There a few blemishes that needed minor body work before it was ready for paint. When it was, it was with the hinges off. There was no apparent paint damage to the bolts nor hinges because of the take off/put on process.
09-07-2013 11:34 PM
blawrence The instructions call for the hood to be test fit so the hinges can be tightened down, then tremoved and painted with the hinges already on. If you order the hood per-painted, how does that work out when you install it? The factory hinges are painted on the factory hood, I assume there is damage when they are unbolted and lifted.
09-02-2013 09:25 PM
jwilson2598 I got $100 for mine from a local guy who picked it up.
09-02-2013 03:02 PM
PRWhitby I tried Craigslist for mine; Put it out there for $200. Only 1 moderately serious bite, but the guy wanted it for under $100. Said that you could buy new hoods on eBay for way less (plus free shipping). I tried to explain that the one he was referencing was NOT an OEM hood, so you really couldn't compare apples to apples. Not even sure about how they could do that free shipping. Mine cost $90 to ship from the Detroit area to the Chicago area. So, currently mine sits, mounted way up on my garage wall resting on a few padded J hooks.

ArcticEOD Ill let you know soon. I kept the box and packing material from the AEV hood to pack the old hood in when it goes to eBay. Ill probably throw it on for a couple hundred and see what it does.
09-01-2013 06:23 AM
bbermann What are you guys doing with the OEM hoods after installing an aftermarket? If you are selling them, it would be nice to know what you are getting so I can figure that into the bottom line for the conversion.

Can you describe the scuffs?

Mopar2Ya I haven't noticed any issues w/water in my engine compartment. The hood definitely lets heat out, you can see it when stopped. IMO the heat reduction is as good for the 3.6 as any engine, because modern engines run hot thanks to emissions(IMO hot is over ~195 deg).

ArcticEOD My painted hood arrives tomorrow from Q-tec. The Old Lady and me are getting some Blue Moon and putting it on! Can't wait.

I didn't do the installation, but the instructions said under an hour. I would have taken a crack at it, but would have needed someone (other than the mrs) to help with lifting it into place. There is no sound insulation used with this new hood.

No. I believe the AEV Heat Reduction Hood was designed as the replacement hood when AEV would swap the 3.8 L engines for Hemi engines.

I tried to order through Quadratec, but their system still only reflected the old model (with only one washer nozzle). When I did an online chat with them, the nice guy told me to call and place the order, then tell them to order the new model. So I took his advice, but the guy who took my call kept telling me that they only carried the old model, and wasn't at all cooperative. So, I ordered directly through AEV. Did cost $130 to ship from Wixom, MI to a NW suburb of Chicago. Showed up in 2 days.

The body shop did an excellent job of matching my Gecko paint.

Looks good! Very happy with mine as well, although I'm slightly bitter they came out with the 2 nozzle version about a week after I got mine put on.

I too live in oregon, I do like it and want one, water into engine bay seem like problem in long term. I also noticed dealer where I get oil change have the hood on one of the jeep but didn't have opening holes. But it does collect the water

It lets in less water then you think. The front vent is over the empty space between the radiator and the engine and the side vents don't seem to allow much water in at all. The holes are small enough that the water beads roll right off of it. Hardly see any water get through even when using power washer at the car wash.
