|andy05jeep||Good job now he's mad.... Just kiddin !!! I also have a snorkel from po hated it at first thot it looked dumb . I cut it down a bit so its below the top of windshield a bit . kinda got used to it tho now and don't mind it .. There is a lot more tho to a snorkel than just throwing one on and being done.|

|flowerfistandbestialwail||Anyone care to expand on the additional waterproofing? PO had a snorkel put in and while I'm not sure how much water this thing's going to see (land locked province and whatnot) I'd like to be properly prepared when I come upon an occasion to use it, if those mods haven't already been done without my knowledge..|

|Dextreme||hondamxer, the issue is that if your jeep is carefully and intentionally set up to be a "swamp beast" and all the necessary waterproofing is done, then great. But most snorkel owners bolt it on and now think their Jeep is now ready for deep water with results of an Epic Fail!|

no one mentioned a cowl intake because when water washes up over the hood, it goes straight for the cowl... the airbox inside is better protected.
That being said, any standing water deep enough to require a snorkle up here in the NW almost always comes with bottomless thick sticky mud that you aren't getting out of.

surprised no one mentioned a cowl intake, actually pulls in cold air and is high enough to never worry about your average water crossing. this thread isnt that old
I have roughly $30 into a windstar airbox cowl intake

|hondamxer||Cant believe everybody never seen any good benifits from a snorkel. I know here in south jersey all we have is water crossings and sand. Ive seen jeeps hydro lock from not having a snorkel that would have been fine if they had one. Of course if your gonna be in deep water you need to look at breather hoses and seal up everything that you can. Guess you cant ask rock guys about water crossings lol. But snorkels are very useful without any cons depending on where you wheel|

I don't buy it. How much cleaner can the air be 2 feet up?
|08-19-2014 12:51 AM|
|Jrozar||Why does everyone always say it's for water, in the desert and the land down under they serve their best use by pulling cleaner air from a higher position. Want to cross Australia you will be traveling a long dirt road from one side to the other. It's not like the I40 in the us, well similar but dirt.|

Since nobody else has said it, one of the pros of a snorkel is that you can star in your own outrageous water crossing videos once you install one. Here are my two favorites:

Not really. My rig gets that treatment a couple of times a month. Tahuya State Forest is 30 minutes away. In fact, I set up the missus '09 for the same type of use. I had to pull the freedom panels off to re-seal them on her rig and found mud and rocks in every seam. Including the door gaskets.
I will admit, we have lost a couple of horns doing this. And a few idler pulleys. Nothing electrical though. Not the first chime or light yet. I am really impressed with the JKs. I came from hammering on full size rigs for years.
