|95YJBright||The 4 banger isn't a bad motor if geared right. All depends on what you want from your YJ. I have a 95 with a 4.0 throttle body 8" of lift on 37" boggers with 4.88 gears yes fifth gear is useless but I'm not a highway guy. I believe if I had 35"s it'd be perfect.|

my neighbor just suggested I forego upgrading the engine, drop in a new 4banger and trans, regear, and have a nice running jeep for the next ten years with minimal problems. Will regearing make that much of a difference? I currently think it has the stock ratio, since fifth gear is useless in any situation and I top out around 60mph in 4th at 2600rpms.
I just figured if Im going through the hassle of replacing the engine, why not get something beefier that i might be able to drive outside of the far right lane.

ford 10/25 rear dana 60 front 2.5 to 4" lift springs SOA.. plan for steering correction.. remove the body lift.... extend the wheel base, see blue torch fab or others for ideas... used 5.3L chevy and trans... if you do all the work your self 8k might get you in the ball park... OR
Keep the front dana 30 add some upgraded shafts, get a ford 8.8 rear, soa a 1.5 lift leafs and run 35 to 36's locked with some 4.56 to 4.88 gears and call it day. Might want to remove the body lift to reduce center of gravity issues...

|Road Runner||thought about that but the wheelbase wouldnt line up. Also thought of stripping down a mid 2000 dodge truck, cutting down the drive shaft, and dropping everything from the truck into and under my rig.|

|BCDonny||if you really wanted to go that big would it not easier if you just dropped the jeep body on a truck that had all you needed?? just thinking out loud|

|Road Runner||ok. assume i stick with 35's... if you had your drathers.... engine/trans/axle combo?|

|cheapjeep71||You want to run 42" tires on the road???? I just don't understand. You would need a ton of lift, v8 motor, and 1 ton axles to hold up to those tires. I just don't think 8k will get you where you want. The tires alone would probably be around 3k and axles done properly would be another 2k. Them you need the motor, trans, transfer case and then the lift. I'd do a 5 inch lift with 35" tires. You could do a lot with 8k in that configuration.|

Am I CRAZY?!?!?!?
Okay All, I have an 88 YJ in which the motor is about to fall out. Here's what I want to replace if I have to put a new motor in her:
Engine, Trans, Front and rear axles, new leaf springs, shocks
Currently have a 2" body lift with 3" shackle leaf spring lift rolling 35's. I would like to roll 42's. Any suggestions on engine/trans/axle combinations for best ROAD performance. I rarely get to get her in the dirt. I have about 8k earmarked for the project, but would like to fit a paint job in if I can.
