Jeeprich25 A secret about the ebrake...for some years on the early yjs it was recalled. Punch in your vin # on Chrysler and it'll tell you. Mine was broke when I bought it but the dealership replaced the entire assembly for free.

Timberwolf for the brakes:
the return spring for the pedal is probably shot. the whole assembly is easy to replace
the cables to the rear wheels could be stretched or broken
pull the rear wheels and drums off to see if the pads are any good

for the oil leak:
are you positive it is the rear main? how bad is the leak?
the back of the valve cover and/or the oil filter adapter could also be culprits

Sativa Anyone know how i would go about fixing my e brake? when i push it down it does not do anything if i pull the release it stays on the foor

kisportolt congrats on the jeep, it's great owning your own vehicle. best advice i can give you on repairing your jeep is search forums (and really search, dont just start threads), watch youtube videos, and find friends who have some auto mechanic smarts. look at the new hampshire local area on here and see if there's anyone that lives close to you that might be willing to help. the more hands/brains working on a project, the better (usually).

jokerchief462 Welcome to the forum!!!! Congrats on the YJ. You will learn more by doing and reading right here. Most of your work will involve common hand tools. So go for it. RMS is a little bit of work since you will have to remove everything ehind the engine but it is doable.

sevenservices Congrats!

as for the rear main seal, the trans has to pull back off the engine. You'll want a lot of tools and some help. At least I would for sure... jack stands, couple jacks, sockets, etc... The seal is at the back of the crankshaft where the transmision hooks up to the engine.

in the mean time, check your oil frequently. Thats the prob. with the rear main seal, they start to leak.

Lincoln33 Congrats on the new to you Jeep. I don't see anything wrong with you trying to repair the Jeep yourself but you need to pick up an OEM service manual and make sure you have the necessary tools. Replacing the rear main seal isn't "technically" hard but it takes some work and a little technique that may not be spelled out in the manual. If you do a search on WF you'll see several posts about it and some of the problems people ran into while doing it.

As for cleaning the engine off there's nothing wrong with power washing as long as you're careful about spraying any electronics. I usally use engine degreaser and a garden hose with a spray nozzel when I clean mine. Good luck to ya.

Sativa I also have a nice layer of mud over the hole engine from right under the hood to the tires whats the best way of cleaning that? I was told to power wash but that seems like a bad idea.

First Jeep

I just bought my first Jeep i say first because i'm sure ill buy more in the future. Its a 89 Jeep Wrangler 4Cyl 2.5L Its old its pretty beat but its mine.

I got it for a great price it was $800 so i had to take it

I'm only 17 so couldn't go for anything to pricey.

Well i'v never done like anything on a car truck or anything. So I guess why not start now. Everyones telling me i shouldn't do it Dad,Mom,Brother,Autozone guys.

I need to replace the rear main seal and i thought i was ready for it but i guess i was watching the wrong videos and reading the wrong tutorials because i was reading ones for 2 part rear main seals but i needed a one part.

So i was wondering should i try and change the rear main seal by myself? I know i have to remove the rear main seal and the flywheel.... No i have no clue how to do that. I don't really have the money to pay for a mech to do it nor do i know the price it would be and would love to know the price if anyone knows.
