A Hi-Lift is an awesome tool, but it's also a dangerous one! If you don't know how to work it, read the instructions on the handle. If they are missing, contact Hi-Lift and they will mail you a new sticker! I have used them in off road recovery and they are great. The optional wide base they sell is a huge plus for stability! Having good jacking points on your bumpers is also key. My Olympic rear bumper has tubular "pockets" that keep the jack from sliding out as one side is raised. A smooth straight factory bumper is an adventure!
Also, a lot of folks have the Hi-Lift out in the weather all year long. It is a really good idea to take it off your rig and lube it from time to time to be sure the springs and pin move freely!

actually, i was going to get my name in diamonds on my teeth. that way, when i had a chaw in my mouth, itd be like discovering diamonds everytime!
yeah, i know/knew better. i was on the side of the road pissed off at a flat.....after that little incident i was thanking God for the flat and not having to go to the hospital

i use mine for trailer tire changes, but my jeep is too tall or flexy....makes me kinda nervous, although i have used it in a pinch.
you can get bottle jacks for cheap and they dont take up much space, and are way safer.
i liked to damn near broke my jaw when i was lowering my old GN with the hi lift and not paying attention. it came so close to my face i could feel the breeze the handle made as it went by.....

x's whatever on the bottle jack. When I first got my high lift I thought I would never need the bottle jack any longer. Then I put some thought into and realized I'd have to balance the Jeep on the high lift and jack it pretty far in the air to change a tire. Since then I ditched the high lift and I'm looking for a bigger and better bottle jack.
The high lift would be nice on the trail in certain instances though...

My baby looks funny now. I don't have a spare for my jeep so Skeeter had to use the spare from his grand cherokee, but it's smaller than my tires so he had to put another tire from his GC on the other side so it would have the same sized tire on both sides. My poor baby...

yeah, a good tall bottle jack is best for changeing wheels/tires, etc.
I'm a klutz and thats no joke... I'd kill someone or myself with a highlift if I owned one. THeres always one in the group I'm with so if its absolutely necessary we've got one. I know thats terrible to rely on someone else but I hate useing them except to do things like install rocker gaurds or do something with the body mounts.

High lift jacks...
...suck with a mighty force.
I done buggered up in Amy's TJ this morning. As I was leaving work I realized I forgot my cell phone in the semi, rather than make a u turn I just shoved it in reverse and started backing up, looked in the mirror and noticed I was headed towards the gate post so I hit the brakes but the damn drive was a solid sheet of ice and I slid right up against it and heard a bang and pshhhhh.
Got out to look and found I'd ripped the sidewall out of the rear tire on a bolt sticking out of the post.
went to put a spare on and had a hell of a time trying to use Amy's new highlift.
It doesn't get a good secure grip on the bumper and once I had the tires off the ground it really wobbly.
Anybody got tips on using a highlift a little more safely?
Oh, and we had 8 days left on the road hazard warranty so it's only going to cost $33 for a new tire
