|jstiley1||The 2.5 doesn't have one.. I actually put a whole new distributor in it though|
|10-15-2013 12:39 PM|
have you tried a new pick up coil on the bottom of the distributor if it has one? My buddies XJ just had the exact same syptoms and after beating our heads on it for days we took it to someone. He changed a plastic ring w/wires under the distributor (pick up coil) and whalla! Fired right up and he drove back from Georgia to Michigan the next day.
Its like $13.00 and makes a world of difference.

|Az88YJ||Similar to mine when I crank fuel pools in TB and wont start. Have someone crank it and while they are cranking it unplug the white injector and see if it will fire. If it does push it back on and see if it stays running.|

|jstiley1||i have pulled timing chain...reset...got distro set...made sure everything is in order with timing...still no luck ... no back fire...to me the issue is the gas is not making it to where it needs to go...basically the gas is pooling in the intake and what ever makes it suck in to the engine is failing....forgive me for being naive about the internals...any suggestions? my wife is ready to take it to a shop...which is a huge slap in the face after all the time and money i have put into it...i just feel like there is one missing piece to this puzzle...|
|10-12-2013 12:42 PM|
|jstiley1||Yah I'm not setting the timing..I'm trying to get everything in order.. as in all in sync... I replaced the timing chain and don't think I did it correctly so I pulled everything back off and trying to do it right hopefully... just have to get all lined up...|
|10-12-2013 12:32 PM|
You don't get the option of setting the timing on the 89 2.5L engine. It is done by the ECU. It reads the inputs from all the sensors and adjusts as required.
So yes the valves need to be closed just don't forget its a 4 cycle engine.
|10-12-2013 11:30 AM|
|jstiley1||Ok I have pulled the valve cover.. I'm trying to set timing I'm reading an earlier reply and it says valves closed.. just making sure that the rocker on the push rod side should be down and spring side up to indicate valves closed correct?|

|Sahara1995||When you say it lags do you mean it almost sounds like a weak battery kind if crank? That an happen with timing advance a few degrees. I had a built mustang that when tweaking the timing for performance would do that sometime when starting. So I kinda agree sounds like timings off a bit. Check it with the light first before you hassle with going all the way in an doing the chain again. Mine was only a few degrees advanced from spec.|
|08-12-2013 07:05 PM|
|jstiley1||ok i have confirmed that fuel is misting out...pulsing with the engine...im gonna assume that the timing is still off...dang it....when it cranks every so often it changes sound, lags like almost freezes...then gets past it...do i need to be at TDC on compression as well when i put timing chain back on...|
|08-12-2013 03:47 PM|
|jstiley1||yes old gas is out...i used the proper rings...the only thing i cannot answer is if its misting out...i can see and start and i havent had any help around .....it just seems like whatever sucks gas into the engine isnt sucking it in there ...which sucks...pun intended|
|08-11-2013 02:55 PM|
did you dry out the old gas?
the injector comes with an assortment of o-rings/gaskets. did you use the correct rings? If the seals are not in the correct spots you will get fuel leaking down.
When you turn the key and look at the bottom of the injector (this pressurizes the fuel system and it sprays a mist into the intake for starting) does it mist out or dribble?
|08-11-2013 12:53 PM|
|jstiley1||another ?...on the ignition control module..there are 3 plugins but only 2 plugs...does the 3 prong go in the top or bottom slot and is there a wire that goes on the blade type connector that close to coil?|
|08-11-2013 12:45 PM|
|jstiley1||alright im back....i got a new injector and installed....still appears to be dumping gas....pool in intake...i have tried to install it with numbers on injector facing me and facing away...|
|08-03-2013 07:11 PM|
|jstiley1||I give up for today gonna order a new injector next paycheck..I'll let talk know how that works..in the pool with a cold beer for now|
|08-03-2013 04:53 PM|
|jstiley1||Ok so don't need that then..I was hoping it was the magic key...this really stinks..its 108 here still having no luck..pulled distro got to tdc on compression stroke.got rotor pointing at 2nite still no change..there is fuel puddling in intake..haven't had a backfire..pulled o2 sensor to make sure exhaust not clogged|

Power steering plug. Compensates the idle under steering loads.
The one on the passenger side is the blower motor single prong.

|08-03-2013 04:07 PM|
Well, if you did have power steering that's what it is for. Here is mine and where it plugs into. It is used to bump the idle up when the pump is under load.
|08-03-2013 03:38 PM|
|jstiley1||Plugs are black not wet|
|08-03-2013 03:07 PM|
|jstiley1||No power steering|
|08-03-2013 02:41 PM|
|RednekYJ||Power steering..... Maybe.|
|08-03-2013 02:14 PM|
|jstiley1||does anyone know where the heck this goes|
|08-01-2013 03:40 PM|
|jstiley1||i know right...|

|Signalman||If my ex got awarded my jeep you can bet your a$$ it would take years and tons of coin for next husband to figure out why it won't run to! You might want to check those break lines pretty good if the last guy was anything like myself.|
|08-01-2013 03:06 PM|
|jstiley1||fresh gas and filter yes...im gonna pull the injector and clean to....and i have never noticed exhaust ..|
|08-01-2013 02:58 PM|
|Sahara1995||One more thing and I can't remember if you told us but is the fuel new. This has out of commission a while right? If the fuel is old that's probably what gummed up the injector causing the fuel pooling. Make sure you have fresh gas and fuel filter too.|
|08-01-2013 02:54 PM|
|Sahara1995||Fix the fuel delivery problem and I bet she runs. Good luck and keep us posted.|
|08-01-2013 02:27 PM|
|Signalman||Is there any exhaust coming out the tail pipe? It's not plugged up with something is it?|
|08-01-2013 01:22 PM|
make sure to dry the puddle out, possibly pull the plugs to see if they are all wet - dry them off.
install new injector, crank it up....
|08-01-2013 01:21 PM|
replace the injector. just had to do this to mine.
or it could be just the o-ring on the bottom part of the injector.
