TeeJay I just did this over the weekend but with a frame swap instead of moving motor mounts due to some severe rot around the rear shakle mounts and me being too lazy/inexpierenced to weld. (though no beleives me.... Yet, pics to come) its a ton of work but we did it with 4 guys in 3 days. We didn't do anything else in those 3 days. In fact we barely stopped to eat. It you have the means and get a good deal I'd say its worth it.

I had a donor yj pile in my garage when we started so almost everything was right there for me to use.

scrambler1 Maybe this will help:
Last year a friend of mine swapped his 94' over. He found a rusted out 94' with a 4.0/ax-15. with about 70,000 miles that ran well but was needed frame repair. He swapped everything over by himself in 2 weekends. he guess's about 35-40 hours total. He bought new motor mounts and welded them into place and after that plug and play. pretty straight forward. Eventually I plan on doing something but right now I am in the middle of restoring and swapping in a 350 TBI,700r4 in my 82' scrambler,so not on the top of my priority's.
but the reason I am mentioning this is for 35-40 hrs of labor you could swap in a v8 and be much more happy with the result.
Thats my 2 cents.

i would run the aw4 tranny that is probably in the cherokee.....it is a medium duty tranny with a decently low first gear.....it is computer controlled but if yoyu have the whole cherokee then no problem...the 4 cyl tranny will not bolt to a 4.0l...i believe the input shaft is wrong

jeepster213 but it would be better to swap a 6 cylinder into a 4 cylinder jeep. being that a 4 cylinder has 4.11 gears in the axles as a 6 cylinder has 3.73. i have a 89 yj with a 2.5l which i'm picking up a 95 cherokee to swap it to a 4.0l. so if i remember to bring my camera when i do it i'll post a write-up on the swap. the major part of the swap is cutting the motor mounts and moving them forward.

4Jeepn Depending on how much you have invested in the current jeep, it might be better to sell it, and buy a YJ with the 4.0L and auto already in it.

flattietj ur very best bet is try to find the same or similar year motor/tranny/tcase harness and computer....otherwise there will be splicing....

LBJ Will the harness from the cherokee work on the wrangler? Will the trans from the 4cyl. bolt up to the 4.0?

1BLKJP Your easiest bet would be to find a motor from a 96 Cherokee. All of your gauges will work and if you can get a hold of the whole wiring harness it's "mostly" plug and play.

Have a 95 yj with a 2.5 and auto. Want to switch to a 4.0 motor, Anyone done this and what do I need?
