Tweak I cant believe nobody has brought this up. Want to know what happens to a car dealership when bad hail comes through? They sell them at drastically reduced prices. They should have given you a new hood or sold you the Jeep at a huge discount.

RepairMan The hard ball owner is an act... I'm glad you're getting what you want in the end. And after I got rear ended on my black pearl Harley over 10 years after it was made, there was no difference in the replacement new factory painted part. It is possible to match pearl or mettalic paint, it just takes skill and good quality materials.

I feel like thats a fair deal all around. I was very polite with the owner until he started getting unruly. SDD74 I would tell that owner to kiss my A. For you to spend your hard earned money on a new jeep it is his responsibility to make sure u get what you paid for. I would want a new hood and $2-3k off the price or make them eat it

I used to work in a Chrysler plant. If something was damaged to the sheet metal during manufacturing we could not use body filler to repair it and sell it as new.

I doubt that the official policy has changed since then.

ProTek Good luck with it all. I would like to see the painted hood in the shade and in the sun in the same spot at the same angle. I would have recorded the owner and showed that to corporate. That or maybe been locking horns.

paul65k Why mess with it......I can tell you for a fact that Silver Metallic is one of the absolute worst colors to match. There are actually metallic flakes in the paint and even if the color is perfect the flakes will lay differently as they were not painted in the same place with the same gun and dried at the same rate......when the sun hits it a certain way you will see the difference......most others may not but YOU WILL and if you are anything like me everytime you see it you will wish you had just waited for another Jeep.

If the dealer gives you any grief then this should tell you about how they will treat you when there is a future issue and you need someone to fight for you with the factory.......you will likely just take the Jeep and hope for the best but remember these words in the months and years (warranty period) to come.

This advice comes from more than 30 years of car and truck ownership but in the end it's nothing more than free advice so that's probably all it's really worth

dukedallas Take the AEV hood for the $500 and run! I had to pay $1k for mine 8 months ago from the dealer. And contrary to what people say the color WILL match when they do it otherwise the bodyshop would go out of business. think about it...unless its a fly by night shop, usually dealerships use quality people, otherwise it would hit their pocketbook HARD, and we know they like to have them stuffed with our hard earned loot! My AEV hood was an EXACT match colorwise.

Salty1 When they show you the Jeep be sure to open the hood and look at it from the underside, that will give you an idea as to how much damage was done. If they had to drill or hammer on the metal very much that will be the place where it will show. If you can see any damage there then I would ask for a new hood or a deep discount on your agreed upon purchase price. Don't get upset and remember this is a business deal and don't take it personal, smile and be firm.... just get what is right for you

Dew Screw that. Tell them you want a new hood or a new jeep.

I once bought a laptop as a gift. Upon opening, we noticed a little scuff mark on the frame of the screen. Went back to the store and after getting the run around for an hour, they finally agreed to swap out the screen.

My only argument was, "I bought a new computer. If there is any damage, it will have been made by me"

Rayko No matter how good the body shops work is it'll never match the paint from the factory.
The Jeeps parts are all painted at the same time with the same paint during assembly. Trying to match that color (especially metalic) will not work too well.

JACK3D Interesting that the owner of the dealership was such an ass about it.. Your Jeep that you purchached from his dealership was damaged in route to the lot. I work in the shipping industry, and there should be an insurance policy on cargo i.e. your jeep. Either the Jeep dealership carries that insurance, or the trucking company who hauled the load of cars carries that policy. 99.999% of the time both will carry such insurance policy. It really shouldn't be that big of a deal for them to replace your hood. If it were me, and I was in your situation, I would have been pleasant with the owner up until the time he started to cop an attitude... When he asked me what would make me happy, and Im assuming he did this with a poor attitude attached to it.. I would have squeezed every cent I possibly could out of him.. His offer to replace the hood, or you pay $500 for the AEV hood would have turned into me getting the AEV hood for free. I wouldn't give that dealership one more penny of business if I were you.

whitelespaul Take the AEV hood and point out to them that the CARFAX will need to be amended to not show that bodywork was done or your brand new jeep will lose 10% of its value before it even leaves the lot. If you replace the hood rather than fix it, you may be able to avoid the CARFAX report diminished value.

spieg Thanks for all the suggestions guys! I do feel like my salesman had been honest with me about it and I appreciated that. I told him that directly and let him know that it meant a lot to me. I took a look at the hood today and at first glance it all looked ok. Looking on the underside of the hood, it was a mess. They had to pound out a spot that was about 10" in diameter and im guessing there had to be a fair amount of filler put on the top of the hood. I shared my concerns with my salesman and the sales manager and said it just didnt seem right that my brand new jeep would have been to the body shop before I even got to see it. After some talking both the salesman and the sales manager agreed with me and said they would take care of it. A few minutes later the sales manager called me out to the jeep again with the dealership owner. He started out very pleasant and seemingly concerned, but soon changed his tune and got very aggressive and tried to tell me there was nothing he could do. He said Chrysler saw pics of the damaged and advised them to have the damage touched up instead of replacing the hood. He got very argumentative, kept talking over me, wasnt listening to me, and was being very disrespectful. He accused me of trying to take advantage of the situation and get something for nothing. After about five minutes of us arguing about it, he got frustrated and finally just asked what it would take to make me happy. I told him I felt like a new hood was the right thing to do. He and the sales manager went back inside and the sales manager came out shortly after. The sales manager and my salesman both were very apologetic for the way the owner acted and said hes just not a people person and doesnt generally deal with people directly. My salesman had even said that seeing the exchange between me and the owner made him second guess working for him and being associated with him(he has only been with the dealership a month or so). They assured me he does a lot of great things for the community and is a good guy who is genuinely concerned about me being happy, but also is concerned about the bottom line. In the end, the sales manager offered to either replace the hood or upgrade me to an AEV hood for $500. I opted for the latter and asked the sales manager to thank the owner for me. I still feel like the exchange I had with the owner was completely out of line, but given that he did take care of me in the end, and both the salesman and sales manager were very easy and pleasant to work with up to that point, id still recommend the dealership and think they do have their customers in mind and are a stand up dealership. Just wanted to give everyone an update! Thanks again for the suggestions!

12CrushRubi It's good your dealer was honest with you at least. If it was me and they had to use any filler I'd have them replace the hood. If they had to pull a dent then there's more than likely some... Albeit a very small amount if it was a good body man.

goin camping Seems you found a good dealer.

First off look at the repair and if all is good just have them (In writing) warranty the repair and move on.

If the repair is not up to specs have them correct it.

Vehicles get damaged in the factory, during delivery and at the dealership. Assuming it's not massive damage it will be repaired and delivered.

kappaknight Before any drastic actions, I'd look at the repair first. If it's to your satisfaction, just get some sort of warranty in writing and move on from it. If it's not to your satisfaction, get the dealer to get a new hood for you - or if you had planned on upgrading to the AEV hood anyway, see if you can get some money towards that.

As for the extra miles, I honestly wouldn't worry about it. It'd be 40 miles of regular driving, not rock crawling or something crazy. Most people can do that in a day or two and it honestly doesn't make your Jeep less new than one with 10 miles on it.

Your dealer did a good thing by being upfront about this thing. I view that as a good customer service and would reward him with your business. Depending on the outcome of this fix, it seems like they will make sure to take care of you and be truthful about it down the road.

lynn Dealers can fix damage up to ~20% of the car's value (may vary by state) and still sell as "new" without the buyer's knowledge.
This is often applied in some hail damage situations.

In this case, I'd ask about the warranty on the repair. Get a guarantee against paint/filler cracking, peeling, fade, etc.
Also push for some $$$ back since the Jeep is no longer exactly what you contracted to buy, and you can void the sale...

aTX427 Have them replace the hood and enjoy. Most auto body shops do better paint work than the factory anyway.

VaJeepster Usually if it gets damaged they can't sell it new cause its had work done my granddad just bought Chrysler 200 and the door got damage something happened and they 8,000 $ off cha Ching and it does not look anything different something to do with the title or something I don't know

hdb That really sucks man. Yeah that stuff happens, mistakes are mistakes, but no you shouldnt suck it up or live with it. It is their responsibility to deliver exactly what you asked for. I think if you wanted you could get a brand new one shipped though you probably dont want to wait. You would probably have to wait for a new hood too but you need to decide what you want and tell them. Theres no way to un-drive the miles to the paint shop so if you want the repainted jeep youll have to suck up the extra miles in that case. But like I said I cant see why they wouldnt be willing to order another one just like it. The paint may not match exactly, I wouldnt know but what I would do is tell the dealer that I will be willing to look at the repainted jeep but if im not happy or if there are a lot of extra miles on it I want another one. They did right by trying to fix it but if there was any ice on the truck it should have been cleaned off before they put the vehicles on it. I cant stand peoples casual attitude towards mud and dirt and rocks etc. being on their trucks and then spraying traffic with it. I know I wouldnt spend 20+ thousand on something that wasnt exactly how I wanted it, and I know they have a responsibility to ship their 20+ thousand dollar items to their customers un damaged.
