Atthehop The company I worked for ran 175,000+ cars in the us alone. They used quality oil filters for many many years until the new CEO came onboard. Now they use the cheapest filters from china. I only use OEM filters since I can get them wholesale and cheaper than filters in auto part stores and Wally World.

Since the filter gasket does not extend to the outer perimeter of the filter, it follows that the filter outside diameter is going to be larger than the filter mounting pad.

Jeep Dad If your jeep was at one of those 30 minute oil change places before you got it they many times put whatever filter kindof fits on the vehicle. When you go to change your own oil next time you can't find the same filter they put on so it tends to wig you out. As long as it screws on and seals it is potentially good. Look through the phone book size reference at autozone or wallyworld to see what those books say. I don't remember what my 4.0 takes. But this same thing happened to me and it was after my daughter took her jeep in to get the oil changed instead of letting me do it and they threw some odd filter on.

oil filter issue

Hey everyone, I just recently bought a sweet 1998 wrangler 4.0 5 sp. While changing the oil I noticed the oil filter I bought at the part store is larger than the oil filter adapter itself. I went back to the parts store and they confirmed I was given the right one.

I changed oil, used the filter I was given and it seems to have sealed just fine. The filter that was on there was a lube Usa type of filter, but it was smaller.

In other carsbive owned, the filter and adapted were the same size.

To better explain what I mean, picture two coke cans stacked on each other. That's how the filter would look on the adapter.

I tried the search feature, to no avail.

This is my first jeep guys, cut me some slack
