|brokejeep||I thought i read somewhere that they have a law that after a certain year that exhaust pipes are supposedly to go past the rear axle housing to be legal. Just in case you have to pass inspections or a cop trying to make his quota.|

Like Patrick, I ran side exit on my '71 w/V6.
And no one ever burned themselves on the exhaust.
I was most annoyed with the exhaust on long drives. Anything longer than an hour, I wore ear plugs. Constant loud sound is very tiring (or exhausting )
If you do it, keep your exhaust diameter to a minimum. It will help your engine by maintaining the back pressure it was designed for. Also, if you run deep water, large diameter pipes don't maintain enough pressure to keep deep water out and it will stall your rig at the most inconvenient time when fording...

|wmdavis007||I had a 77 CJ5 V8 304 w/side pipes (Golden Eagle) and it sounded nice...was hard to give up. But I really don't think a 4 banger will have a very good sound...but that is my opinion. Good luck.|

283 in the '71
V6 in the '67
Honestly, the 283 was stock, and a little tired. The V6 as seen was a fresh rebuild, .040" over, mild cam, Offenhauser 4bbl. intake, Pertronix/ MSD ignition, etc. The V6 was stronger than the 283..

|Slater451||Well I did think about that and it will be ticked up under the body against the frame if I do decide to do so. So that leaves about 6 or 8 inches of clearance for that issue|

I wasn't telling you what you should or shouldn't do, just sharing my experience...
I also ran the pipes out the side on my '71 CJ5 with a 283 and glass packs.

|Slater451||Ok thanks! I've had side exit pipes on my V8 Dakota and it got old quick but I also had deleted the cat and ran a full race muffler. So I was thinking that with a cat it might dull it down a bit. Or at least hoping|

|Patrick H||I ran fenderwell exit headers on my V6 CJ5. For years, I had the exhaust turned out in front of the tires. It was obnoxious at the drive through windows, blew exhaust on other cars in parking lots, and the noise got old on the trail with the doors off (my mufflers weren't all that loud, mini turbos). Best thing I did was build tail pipes to run it out the rear corners behind the tires. Just some things to think about.|

Old school CJ style side pipe exhaust
Thinking of making one of these set ups on my 06 2.4L strait off the down pipe and wrapping around the frame and along the out side of the frame with a thrush glasspack with a turndown tip Or a purple hornie header muffler with the proper adapters. Opinions please.......
