03 sahara jeeper This is why I won't attempt something like this even in the Summer. I know my limits. l feel bad enough holding people up, let alone putting them at risk.

Oldguy Sorry man, this is why we've been bitching for the last two days. Shit, I wish you had pointed S&R at them, they'd have to sell their rigs to pay for getting their asses out of there.

JOCJK Caleb good meeting you today. I'm just back to breck and don't think I'd be much help on one leg. Have to say its kinda crazy that you pretty much predicted this exact Scenario. Stay safe out there.

backcountryislife URGENT help needed near Georgetown CO

This is why we don't do shit like this in the winter.

I'm about to leave MY home, MY family & risk MYself, because someone else didn't have the common sense to know what was a good idea & wasn't. (and looking at his login on CO4x4 he friggin lives RIGHT HERE. WTF???)

Thanks for taking my advice this weekend, seriously. At least I'm only going to ONE problem tonight. We all get a little stir crazy here & there... some of us listen to reason though... and some don't.

I just took a shower, and was about to relax & watch a movie, but now I'm about to go out in the snow for someone I can't even get ahold of.
fuck.

Colo-TJ HMMMMM. I just caught wind of a small group that is hung up on Saxton road. they are at the top almost to the spring creek intersection. Winter wheeling is a tough deal if your not set up right. or if you end up on the wrong trail entirely. I am sure that thes guys thought it was fine......
it was nice and I guess a storm has rolled in.
02-09-2013 08:43 PM
Dammit Fair enough. I appreciate the heads up...
02-09-2013 08:42 PM
backcountryislife Yeah, not saying it's illegal, pretty sure it's not... hell, come on up and support Jim, Jimmy, and Brian. I'll give you their numbers before you come up to save you the hassle.

I'm not calling you stupid, not trying to cut on you, but as someone who didn't just move here, and spends a HUGE amount of time in the backcountry around here in my back yard every chance I can, I will just say it's not a good idea, and not in the "it'll be a challenge" way. I'm always up for going & helping folks out, but taking that kind of risk in the winter just isn't prudent.

If you DO decide to head up, give me a call before you go please so that I can head up if you have a problem, or don't call by mid afternoon. I won't risk taking my jeep up, but I can get two buddies from town together & head up there on the sleds pretty quickly if needed. I'll give you a good ration of SH**... but I'll get there faster than anyone else can.

Btw, conditions up there have changed HUGELY in the last two weeks. we went from a september snowpack with some ice, to a december snowpack up high... not even close to the same thing, just a few miles down the range like above Idaho springs & my house in Dumont, that's not the case.

Oldguy I don't know for a fact that you would get fined for being on that particular trail, but I do know that it is frowned on with good reason. It is simply too dangerous to screw around on trails like that in the winter. Also I know that at least one person has been warned off in that area and will be looking at a stiff fine if he gets caught again.

I love winter wheeling and do it as much as I can. But you have to use common sense. I've gotten caught on a shelf road with a foot or two of crunchy snow so I know just how bad it can get. I've kept the dents and scratches in my windshield frame just as a reminder of that.

Dammit Why would the FS fine you for being there? Not being facetious, just asking.

I was up there a week ago and didn't see any closures, though the ice flows running across the trail (that leaned DOWN the hill, toward the drop-off) were off-putting. Turned around at the split of 248.1K and 248.2A.

It was a pretty easy drive to that point, though there is definitely a layer of ice under the snow. Likes to pull the front toward the cliff unannounced here and there.

I just called the Clear Creek Ranger office at (303) 567-3000. They're closed, so no people to talk with, but the only closures mentioned on the automated line are Devil's Canyon and Barber Fork Road. Am I missing something?

Oldguy Oh, and then if the FS catches her up there it's a really nifty fine on top
02-08-2013 10:06 PM
Oldguy Just ignore her, whatever brains she was born with were lost long ago. Maybe a five hunderd dollar pull will get through her skull...

I think you are confused... but that's ok. It's an out & back, so it's not as if there's a "passable" but you're going to get (if you get this far) to some alpine area where I can guarantee you that you're not going to keep going, and being that the only guys who do recovery around here are buddies of mine, I can tell you that can be a VERY expensive mistake.

I'm all for a challenge, but I just don't understand your motivation to run a trail that's not really tough, but is just not one that should be run this time of year. It's RIGHT behind two of the tallest mountains in the state, and though it may look like there's not much snow around here, that's just not a place you want to be.

It's february... buy a sled or something

Btw, up high our snow isn't like what you're thinking of back home, our high altitude stuff up there will be strongly windcrusted and will be pretty nasty. If it was ID pow like you're used to I'd probably be up for it.... it's just so different up high where we get winds you guys don't get up there.

Rooster454 Well thanks for the heads up boss. Looks like I'll be sitting this one out haha

backcountryislife btw, if you want to hit higher altitude stuff, and play in the snow I'd hit cascade & that area.

It's off of guanella pass... it won't be passable, guaranteed. I've been thinking about sledding up there while there is low snow and it won't be too sidehilled in yet.

The whole trail is lee facing, and shaded and will be snow loaded... not a TON of snow, but this is asking for trouble imo. I would very much recommend not going up there. it may not be a big snow year, but this isn't one of the trails you want to hit in the snow imo.
