Without seeing a schematic of the wiring harness I can only suspect the reason for the relays, but as an electrical engineer if I am correct you should definitely use them.

If the new lights draw more current, meaning use more power, than the old lights, the stock wiring may not be a large enough gauge to handle the increased load without overheating. And over heating of wires can lead to the insulation melting and the wires shorting out or even catching on fire.

And if the additional power requirement is true and you just replace the wiring from the light switch to the new lights, you just move the problem to the light switch and the wires feeding that switch. Which could cause your light switch to fail prematurely since it will be switching more current than it was designed to handle. Or worse, if the wires feeding the light switch are under sized they could over heat and fail as mentioned above.

If the new wiring harness has new wires running from the relays to the new lights one of the things mentioned above is most likely true and you definitly want to use them. The relays purpose is to use very little power from the factory light switch to the relays to turn the relays on, which will then turn on the more powerful lights, using the relays larger contacts that are indeed designed to handle the additional current load.

Again this is all speculation since I have not seen the schematic for the new wiring harness or the wiring diagram for the JKs lighting circuit.

bostongmw My kit has grey wires. Cann you post pics of where the wires connect to the battery and also what the cables look like being chased to the lights themselves. Are they on top of the engine components or snaked underneath?

sunnykk If you don't feel comfortable drilling holes, you can zip tie the two relays in the corner to the black wire cover thingy (Sorry, don't know what it's called) which is what I did.

You will need to unplug the top part of one of the relays to route the zip tie.

onetraveller Pics of relay location as requested. Pull the relays out of their socket and mount the socket. That way you can change the relays easily if they go bad. Also, I put dielectric grease in each of the connectors to prevent corrosion in the future.

Mike, Could you take and post a pic of the relays' install location? I'm planning this upgrade myself and would love to see a pic of the relay mounting you did. Thanks, Roger

onetraveller Yes, the one connector is wired to trigger both relays. You will want to pull the battery out to mount the new relays. Other than the relays, just take your time routing the wires and use the aiming procedure on Daniel Stern's website when you are done. You can aim them with the grill put back in place. You will need a torx bit (T15 I think) for the aiming screw.

bostongmw Thanks. The mounting was my primary concern. I did upgrade to the Osram bulbs so I think it is best to take my time and do a dry fit first. The rest looks to be fairly easy.

I noticed the harness has only one male converter connector cable. Is it taking care of both bulbs?

onetraveller That depends on which bulbs you have. If you have the standard bulbs that come with the SMS kit, than you can use the converters you have.

The SMS harness will give you more light however, and isn't much harder to install. The hardest part on my 2013 was finding a place to mount the relays. Turns out there is a perfect spot on the passenger side fender wall, behind the battery. You have to drill a couple of holes through the metal into a small hollow space, but they fit perfectly.

Help With Hella Light Install from SMS

Just received the kit today. The harness is a little daunting for those of us technically challenged. Do I need to use this relay-based harness if I already have a simpler H13 to H4 wire converter. Or will this cause harm to the lights or not work at all. Thanks in advance.
