HELP tire carrier decision

I have the factory tire carrier right now and 33x12.5 bfgs and am looking to upgrade the carrier but am now second guessing because im wondering

Should I save my money to immeadiately buy a sye ?
Do I even need it?
Is 3/8 inch steel too thick and heavy?
Is that the only way to mount a gerry can?
Is it worth the $175?
