What they said ^ about backspacing, but the width of the wheel makes a difference as well. A 9" wheel will stick out more than an 8" with the same backspacing.
What wheels did you order? I have rugged ridge 17x9 wheels that are 4.75" back spacing and my wheels stick out past the fenders with tires that are only 11.2 inches wide. (285/70-17)

a 12.5 inch wide tire is pretty wide. you dont really see them much wider until you get into the 40ish inch tall area.
like Watchthis! said, the backspacing is what gets you the wide stance. find out what the backspacing is on the new wheels. chances are, it will be less(equals to a wider stance) that what is stock.

Less back space will give you a wider stance.
stock wheels and tires
Aftermarket wheels with 3.5 BS same tires

Wide stance 33" tires
So I am in the process of adding new tires and a lift to my JK, and I have a little bit of a newbish question for y'all. As of now, I have Procomp A/T (I still have to drive this thing from Durham to Atlanta relatively frequently, so no M/T for me) 33x12.5R17 tires on order with a 17x9 wheel, and a teraflex 2.5" coil lift. I am getting 4 tires for the price of 3 with this set up, as well as a discount on the lift, but I was wondering if there is another way to get 33" tires with a wider stance than what I have described. Is there a way to go with a wider tire than what I have on order, possibly by going down to a 16" wheel?
