PStov98TJ A regear is not absolutely needed for 33's with the 2.5L especially if you have the 5 speed. I run that and it does just fine. I would like to regear at some point but it's definitely not like I need it tomorrow. Just my .02

Jsb0032 From what I have read it sounds like my 2.5L will need to be regeared if I move up to 33's. I currently have a 2002 SE with I assume 4.10. Is the regear needed for 33z10.50 and 32's as well or just 33x12.50?

My set up is very similar. 05 LJ auto with 4 in lift 33's and stock 3.73 gearing. When I bought the jeep it had 35s. Definitely improved going to 33s. I think it drives fine, but maybe ignorance is bliss. I live in AL so I do admit it struggles on hills on the highway (around 55 mph it bogs down) you either give it more gas or just cruise in the right lane. If money were no object I would probably regear, but I am fine the way it is .

doclouie That setup will not be too bad for 33" tires. The ideal setup would only be 4.10 for the inline 6 and the 3 speed auto tranny, which you have. If I were you I would set it up the way that you want and just drive it and see how you like it and worry about a regear down the road if you really want to.

at the lift heights your talking, that discussion is largely irrelevant. as for tires, it's the same difference basically.

UnlimitedLJ04 whether you regear or not, make sure you fix the speedo...otherwise your next post will be asking why your mileage is so crappy.

andrew127 You wont hurt anything but you will notice it getting a bit sluggish when your climbing hills and going to pass someone, and your revs will stay lower than before. A few of the guys in my Jeep club are running 4 to 6 inch kits with 33s and 35s, and they have for the most part swapped out for 4.56 gears for better trail and on road control. You can usually get good re gear kits for around $150 to $200

I think they are 3.73 gears.

andrew127 The stock axles will handle 33s no problem, however depending on what gear ratio you have you might notice a decrease in power, and if your driving highway a lot you wont have much top end revs. Re gearing doesnt cost too much, if you take your vin number into your local Mopar dealer they will be able to tell you what gear ratio you have and then you can go from there.

I am thinking about putting a Rough Country 3.25" Suspension Jeep Lift Kit on my 2002 tj and some 33x12.50 tires. It has a v6 and auto trans. Will the stock axles be able to handle this. It will be a DD too.
