Yeah, I just went with an HID kit. DDM tuning. I got to talking with some friends and longevity wise, the HID's hold up better.
From what I understand so far, the halogens essentially burn a filament, and eventually that filament will get thin enough that little vibrations like hitting a pothole break it and then the bulb is toast. Hotter burning bulbs, even though the filament should be thicker in design, burn out that much quicker.
HID's on the other hand burn a gas that lasts longer than the filaments in a halogen bulb. I have heard that the HID's aren't as bright, but the 55w ballast kit puts out a claimed 5000 lumens which should be more than enough for me. The 35w ballast puts out 3200-3400 lumens. I went with the 55w primarily because the higher wattage washes out the colors more. Basically from the kelvin chart they provide the white band is wider, the blue & yellow bands are narrower so you can squeeze in more lumens without getting a blue tint to the light. Plus for the price of the really expensive, supposedly better, halogen bulbs, you get the whole wiring kit and the HID bulbs. Those PIAA ones are like 70-80 bucks for a pair of halogen bulbs, that will probably burn out just as quick as the cheaper ones.

From the pics provided, this puts out a LOT more light than my stock lights. I plan to add some more pics to it from my install once I get the parts.

I tried a set of led H3 bulbs in my fog lights. They looked quite similar to these. I'm waiting for my refund now. They sucked bad.
As for the headlights I bought the Bosch housings from Bus Depot like someone above. Then used a 80/100watt H4 bulb bought from napa in them. Light is bright white.. not blue. Looks like daylight and frankly the lights are freaking amazing. Before a friend asked me if my headlights were even on. Then I could turn on my factory fogs outfit with 100watt bulbs and drown out the factory headlights completely. These new lights I can hardly tell when I turn the fogs on. Yet they're not shining up in oncoming traffic either.
For both of these light upgrades I added relays to carry the current. Also the power side of the headlight wiring appears to be of sufficient gauge to carry the power, but the ground side is embarrassingly small. So I replaced the ground with a 14 gauge wire.

Well they claim they are for headlights, and they are an H4 bulb. Bt after your illustrations I don't see how they would work as well as a normal H4 bulb.
So the search continues. I appreciate everyone's help so far.
I just looked around quadratec for a bit and saw some different brands. Anybody have experience with the following brands I have seen so far? I am only talking about the bulbs here, not the housings.
PIAA - Really expensive, I know you get what you pay for but is a pair of bulbs really worth $80?
PUTCO - cheaper, but are they any good?
Delta - middle range price
Hella - middle range price
I saw some that I like but want to make sure the color is more white. A lot of these bulbs give the lights blue, yellow, even purple tint from their descriptions.

Those bulbs have the LED chips located all over the place. To replace an H4 they would have to have the LEDs in the same location as the H4 filaments. I can tell by looking at them that they will not work with H4 reflectors.
You cannot convert H4 reflectors to HIDs or LEDs, and maintain even light patterns without dark spots, bright spots, and generally poor performance. Use H4 bulbs in H4 reflectors. This is how it works:
The H4 High beam filament is located at the exact focal point in a parabolic reflector, which produces a long range beam. The low beam filament is away from the focal point and half is shielded by a metal cover which produces the sharp low beam light cutoff needed to keep from blinding oncoming drivers. Then the front tip of the bulb is covered with dark ceramic to shield the direct view of the bulb filaments from oncoming drivers.
HIDs or LEDs relocate the light source and performance degrades. Use H4 bulbs with H4 reflectors. If you want LED headlights, buy complete headlight LED assemblies - expect to pay hundreds of dollars apiece for good ones.

Those LED's look more like turn signal bulbs or something like that. I can pretty much guarantee you they are not headlights.
I just did mine and followed Unlimited's recommendation and got the Bosch housings and H4 bulbs from Bosch European H4 Headlights - PAIR. Best fifty bucks I ever spent on my Jeep.
I got the "Flosser" H4 bulbs 12v 60/55 watts. They were under $4.00 each. I don't really have any way to compare to other lights and conversions and what not, but I can tell you that just the basic swap out I did using the factory wiring and staying with the stock wattage still made a big difference and was an excellent upgrade.

|Patrick H||For 17 bucks, I'll guarantee those aren't anywhere near bright enough for a headlight. Yes, they fit H4 applications, but I'm not sure what you'd actually (realistically) use them for. One of you guys should buy a pair and see...|

they don't list lumens either unfortunately. But I see what you are saying, it's like comparing standard to metric. Completely different system of measuring light output.
I wish they had more info on these things, I was hoping somebody on the forum knew about them. At the very least, LED's have a better life span. So if light output is good enough to be considered safe without blinding oncoming traffic I think they may be worth a try.
There is aways an exception to every rule, but it seems anything has to be better than stock bulbs. I can't tell where the street lights end and the beams from my lights start while driving at night. And the street lights in Norfolk are not known for their awesomeness. They are not bright enough that I should not be able to see my headlight beams.

|doclouie||Wattage on LEDs is not a straight across relationship as compared with stock lighting. What you need to research is lumens which is light output. It is very hard to quantify the amount of light between the two totally different technologies.|

|viperx6x9x||Unfortunately I can't find info on the wattage. They claim 50,000 hour lifespan on the LED's though. If that is true I will never have to change the bulbs again while I own the TJ.|

|mygirlscallhim pedro||The E-code lens will be the main thing. Bulbs are bulbs. The difference will be mainly wattage. You will not see much change from different bulbs.|

Lumen H4 bulbs? anybody try them?
LUMEN® - H4 LED Bulbs
So I came across these things and was curious if anybody tried these out before and if it was worth it. My plan is to get the Hella H4 conversion housings. I was thinking these would be a reasonably priced bulb to go with but are these housings designed to work well with LED bulbs?
Either way, these were just one idea. Does anyone have suggestions for reasonably priced H4 bulbs that would work well? I have looked into a few different brands but the only ones I found a good write up on in the forum was DDM tuning. I like them so far but just wanted to see what else was out there to choose from before I jump in and spend $50 plus per bulb on those things. The LED ones were only $17.
