jprcrpr When I bought my '99 TJ last November, the horn and cruise did not work. After researching the issue on this forum, and troubleshooting virtually everything to no avail, I replaced the clockspring today. I now have a working horn AND cruise control. This forum rocks!!!

Sounds like you had other problems too then, the Clockspring has no connection at all to the radio or causing the entire electrical system to die as you said......

I replaced the clockspring, the problem went away.

Nope, it's not your Clockspring with those symptoms, more than likely you have a loose or corroded ground. There should be a ground strap between the tub and frame, and or engine. Most likely it's the strap between the tub and frame.

Don't know if you're still having problems but it's not your clock spring.

I had a problem similar where my Jeep would just stop running or sputter at different speed. Took it to the dealer and their idea of repair was replace until you get the right part. Two fuel pumps and $1500.00 later I found a first class diagnostician who spent 30 MINUTES and determined it was my fuel pump RELAY switch! $8.00 and $50.00 for him later the problem was fixed! Been two years now with absolutely no problem. Hope this helps, if you haven't fixed it already.

I've been dealing with an electrical gremlin for over a month.
it's pretty random, and seems to be virtually non existent if I keep to short trips- less than 5 miles.

young-blood You have a 98?
I can sell you a clockspring I picked up from a salvage yard recently. It was not needed as I already had one installed. It's cruise control ready and is warrantied by the yard to work or I can exchange it. PM me if you are interested, Also have cruise buttons, but yours likely work.

They work on almost all vehicles, so if you sell the Jeep it may still help you out. $13 is pretty good.

netlohcs Mine went out recently too. There are no aftermarket companies that make these, so you have to fork out the 200 bucks that the dealership gets for them.

Have wranglers actually had a recall on clock springs? Or just the minivans?

It's definitely not hard to fix yourself. I got my clock spring from Jeep dealership for under $200. But do make sure to disconnect the battery and remove those fuses. Also make sure to get the steering wheel pulley as well, you can rent them out from any auto part store.

Jerry Bransford First on the air bag, you simply need to make sure to disconnect the battery, then remove both airbag fuses behind the glove box. That will assure the air bag won't blow in your face, just make sure you give it several minutes before actually starting to get into where the clockspring is behind the airbag on the steering wheel.

Here's a pretty good set of instructions for replacing the clockspring. These are actually for the XJ but it should be identical for the TJ. ClockSpring Replacement - Page 1 of 1

The Ugly Jeep Our 02 Caravan Had it replaced 4 times. 1st 2 under recall/warranty, third done at different Dodge dealer, after warranty expired ( I figured someone at the dealership must have been screwing up, so I tried a different one ), last one I did myself. Crap design in the minivans. Got rid of that boat anchor.

Googled Clockspring...did not see a date...but did not look to close...call the 800 number and find out whats up...

Chrysler is recalling about 500,000 1996-1998 minivans and an extending a warranty on 1.3 million more because of the clockspring in the steering wheel, which provides power to some internal components, may have been installed off-center. This may cause the air bag warning lamp to illuminate; the driver's air bag, horn, or cruise control may stop working. For details, call DCX at (800) 853-1403 and have your vehicle ID number handy.

just had my 98 into the dealer to find out why the airbag light was on and why the cruise and horn werent working. turns out to be the clockspring!!

how hard is it to replace?? im no dummy but i dont wanna blow the air bag either???

im tryin to sell this so i wanna fix it, thanks fellas!!
