Getting the most mileage out of your fuel has alot to do with watching your tach. If you're driving an auto. watch your tach. closely...when it shifts into 3rd gear, look at your speed also...try to keep your speed just above the point where it dropped into 3rd.
It doesn't take a rocket engineer to figure out that the higher the RPM's in any given gear = more fuel comsuption.

give it a fresh tune up. on mine all i have to do is change the plugs, i have the coils on plugs...
or try a fuel treatment... i was getting 13, just tried a prodect name called BG Products Inc. look them up on the web,
BG 44K® Power Enhancer®
that is what i just used in my last tank. i still got 13, but this tank i am at 200 miles and have a 1/4 tank left.

my dad used to average 21 mpg on a tank in his '02 with 28" tires and 3.07:1 axles. he gets 23 in his XJ limited with 3.55:1 and 30" tires.
it's all about how you drive
in my current set up I used to get 19mpg cause I was used to driving a $300 honda i was afraid would blow up if i asked it to do anything; now, with the same set up (real lift instead of bb) i get 14mpg, cause i drive it like i want to drive now and don't have to worry about being sans car cause it exploded.

I had a Nissan Titan that got upper 10's in town and max 13 on the highway. Jeep gets 12-15 and I'm tickled pink!
Lot more fun too!

|nater344||I noticed the biggest improvement in gas mileage when I replaced the upstream O2 sensor. Make sure that you have good plugs, wires, cap and rotor. My next mod will be an electric fan which will free up some power and hopefully improve gas mileage a bit. Some people also claim that a cold air intake and a throttle body spacer also helps, but I have not tried it yet.|

I ask because 20 MPG is pretty much on the far end of the rainbow for TJ's and I can't get anything close to that number.

Sorry if this was already posted, i didnt have time to read the entire set of posts but (once again my results are based on a cherokee) i installed an MSD 6al ignition in my cherokee 4.0 the reason is that i had it laying around from my drag car and thought what the hell. anyway It imediately improved the power and fuel economy. my cherokee was 4.0 with 5 speed running 33s with stock gearing so the foot was down all the time due to the lack of original power to it. It increased the power alot and increased my mpg by 6. You can find them on craigslist often for about $125 or buy them new for $185-250 depending on where you go. SUmmit also has their own retagged version they sell new for $175. it is a 6al also. i would advise it if it is indeed available for your engine. not sure your ignition on that. but worse case you can always resell it for more as they are always in demand. Just an idea to think about.

|daanbc||I wish I could get 13, I'm getting 12 now. But I only had it for a week. I filled it up, the needle is a tick above half a tank now, and I have 125 miles on it.|

|Sb5551||What is this gas mileage you speak off? I average about 170 miles to a tank.|

|catITguy||ya no offense bud, but it seems if you 'need' at least 3 more (up to 16) you may be in the wrong vehicle. Jeeps are great fun, but you have to realize going into it that gas mileage is not a jeeps strongpoint - they are geared for low end torque and are as previously mentioned, not even close to aerodynamic.|

|q8jeeper||buy a prius hehehehe|
|03-15-2009 07:15 PM|
i run both a hard and soft top.. some people say hard tops get better gas mileage but i think the added weight takes away from any aerodynamic difference it would make..
i tried keeping my rpms under 2250 when driving.. what dave said, you have to learn where your jeep likes to run at.. flooring it all the time eats your gas.. take it slow and you will notice a big difference..
i even ran wider 31s.. i had 31x10.5s..
if you dont plan on ever really plan on taking your jeep through deep mud holes or out in very sandy areas.. you could always look into a cold air intake.. im not sure how much of a difference they make but ive heard from many people they give you an extra mpg or 2
