As stated above. We bought our jeep to be a family ride. something that all 4 of us could get in and go for a ride. Now it has a 4" lift 35" tires, sliders, armor, winch and can hang with the best of them. I also drive it every day too. did I mention that I have taken out the back seat and it is a 2 seater, that my wife hates to ride in too?
My best advice is the same as above. Don't go alone, trust your spotters, they have been there too, and if you don't feel comfortable enough to do something, don't. If you ever get a chance to ride with someone on a harder trail, do it. You will be blown away with the capabilities of not only a Jeep but most of the modified 4x4's out there.
Last bit of advice of advice for people who have been with me.

Welcome to the forum! I'm in complete agreement with Chad. I flagged all the easy trails to hit in my backroads guide, and ended up starting off on a 6. I planned on modding my TJ in minor ways, but the level to which I now research and wait for my bonus to come is ridiculous. I always have a list of parts to buy, in order of priority on hand and I've doubled my tool collection over the last year, which is awesome. (I think Ed may have me sold on Detroit TruTracs, possibly ordering tomorrow)
The people on this forum are a wealth of knowledge and just great people in general. I started off brand new as well and I can't believe how much I've picked up from the folks on the forum. Beautiful scenery, great people, and awesome trails are a great way to spend a weekend.

|BreckenridgeYJ||Would you feel comfortable dropping the weight of the vehicle on them? I'm sure they are all plastic and will protect from nothing. If you are going to be on graded dirt forest roads I'm sure you're fine..... but even ruts can impact the rockers not to mention rocks. Personally, I wouldn't consider taking the risk of either an insurance claim or a 1000+ repair bill over 100-200 for something you are guaranteed to need. 1 and 2 difficulty trails will NOT keep you entertained. I find the washboard surface of many to be more irritating than enjoyable.|

|BreckenridgeYJ||I would look for sliders now.... as with any sport, the off season tends to offer better inventory and lower prices. This will NOT be an elective repair if you want to keep the body in tact. I had a set on my tj.... and just received (this morning) a much burlier set in the mail. (used off craigslist, but shipped from the shop). If you do any trails up near summit county, make sure to pm me! I'd love to join|

Thanks for the advice and welcomes. I can understand the desire to mod/upgrade. I bought the sport package only and have already decided after a summer of learning and exploring, a new wheel package will most likely be one of the first along with skid plates. Keeping in mind most of my driving will be done on highways and roads.
As far as trails, it will be lower levels only for sure at least until experience and comfort increases.
So far all I have to say is what a wonderful machine this thing is.

Not too long ago I was in the same position as you are now. The Colorado forum is filled with a lot of great and friendly people who I've always found willing and ready to offer suggestions, friendly advice, opinions and good guidance!
Traildamage is a great site to pick up info on the trails. My advice is run trail levels 1, 2 and 3 until you start learning your comfort level and your Jeep's capabilities. As mentioned before JKs are phenomenally capable machines, but don't let that get you sucked into something unsafe on the pretense that "aw she'll pull us through". Plenty of reports of inexperienced drivers tumbling down some mountain side...best weapon against getting yourself or family hurt or your machine damaged is the one between your ears. Trust your gut and instincts
But as you get out more and get in some groups of folks who go out you'll quickly learn how fun it is and start moving up the trail ratings pretty quickly.
Some great starter trails that I cut my teeth on were:
Devil's Canyon : It says 3-4, there is only one section that is really a "4", but it is coming down a long hill...there are some rocks that would like to meet your paint 'n' body, you just take it slow and watch your wheel placement and you'll be fine. Otherwise it's fun to just drive, have a picnic or hike about a bit.
Rampart Range Road : Level 1..some spiders may be 2...Pretty washboarded in areas but scenic especially on the southern edges with large boulders to get out and explore...and little spider trails that you can branch off of and explore.
Mammoth Gulch : Level 2-3...Very scenic drive, especially as you begin your initial climb you can look down the valley and see a river flowing through some green pastures, a little school house and lots of mountain peaks.
Saints John : Level 3...Coming up out of Keystone you have good trees and following the trail up through and around Saints John you see a lot of mining history, tailings, old cabins, old hotels and such. This trail is great because you can get up on top of the "world" and be just shy of 12,000 feet and be on the Continental Divide...see Breckenridge, Webster Pass and all these great mountains. There is one mountain up there that I have forgotten the official name, but it looks like a bowl of Lucky Charms from all the minerals leeching out...fantastic colors.
Just two cents...adjusted for inflation may be worth less than that, but some great starter trails that whet the appetite for more Jeepin!

Welcome to the world of Jeeps.
Don't go wheeling alone.
Buy a good quality "Recovery Strap" and read about how to use it.
Don't buy tow straps with hooks!
I have never used my Hi-Lift, but I'm sure one day I might.
Watch what experienced drivers do and listen to your spotters.
Everyone says "I won't do any mods to my Jeep" and as soon as you start trying stuff the next thing you are scouring the sites trying to find the best deal on parts and pieces.

But just stay on this forum. As a newbie the best thing to do is go with a group. It works best to go with people that know what they are doing so that they can teach you. Keep an eye out on the forum for trips and do the research on the trail before going.
is a great website to look into trails. I will be starting out pretty mellow after lifting my Jeep in a couple of weeks to make sure I have everything set right so will be interested in starting off nice and easy in the beginning. But the good spots will not really open untill about June. So you have some time to get some good internet research in.
Is your jeep auto or manual?

|wanderlust||You will be completely amazed what a stocker can do. In a month or 2 I know of a stock rubicon suspension that will be for sale (springs and shocks, wheels and tires as well) jks are pretty safe on the bottom but you will want to get some rocker protection immediately. Again, find rubicon take offs, best way to go.|

Welcome! I'm also a Jeep "noob" I picked up a 98 tj in December and have gotten well underway modifying mine. Best advice I can tell you is DON'T get the itch to modify unless you're ready to drop some $$$$. It's very addicting . I have more money into mods than I do into the purchase of the jeep itself!
That said, get out and drive it! invest in armor (rock sliders, and underbelly) as with yours being brand new, it would be a shame to beat it up more than necessary (but be prepared for some dings and scratches). Next, plan on some recovery equipment. You can get by with a hi lift jack and even use it as a winch. This forum has some absolutely amazing people on it that will be very valuable to the learning curve. Join on some of the easier runs and enjoy the new toy. I believe it's best to go with people that know how to handle every situation and extraction to avoid a LONG cold walk out to cell signal! Plus, it's a ton of fun! I've made a ton of new friends already.

So I just purchased a 2013 Unlimited because my niece was out in the summer and I really loved the vehicle. I will never be one for major mods or heavy off roading but I did see a web site for lots of trails, etc to enjoy Colorado and my new Jeep.
I figured I would use this first summer to learn do and donts, etc.
Any suggestions or ideas to help a newbie out?
