Well the 6th letter is a 2 so it's a base model.
Would all the graphics and body molding be from the Islander package possibly?

|moneypit||The 6th letter from the left is the series number in the vin. 2 is a base model 4 is a sahara, 5 is a Larado and 6 is a Renegade.|

This could be a dumbass question but how do I tell if it is a Renegade, Islander, etc?
Can I decode this by the vin#?

Dont really know if it was an islander or not.
It had the HUGE decals from front to rear and the body matched molding going from the front to rear as well.
Noticed "had", I have slowly began taking thing offs to make it look more like a Wrangler.
The decals are gone, as well as the side body molding.
Now its on to painting the flares.

|cam3sixd||Sounds like you bought an islander, Painted flares and sidesteps were a factory install. Same with the blue/green color.|

|Bugboy||that is good info also. I always used a razor blade for the windows themself and scotchbrite pads with dish detergent for the rubber. then again i am old school i use razor blades for runs etc also hehe.|

|EMS 34 20||Bugboy You are 100% corect prep prep and more prep!! Just a side note if you get over spray on the winshield use foamy window cleaner or soapy water and a white scotch brite (also great bug remover).|

are these the flexible type flares or the really hard ones. I am not sure which you are refering to. But if they are flexible you want to get Flex bumper paint you can get that in gloss, flat and pretty much any color you want. but the prep work is what is needed most. The red scotch brite pad is great for this as suggested by ems 34 20. but make sure you completely dull the paint. then wipe it in alcohol. this will show you were you missed with the scotchbrite pad. then when you think you are done scotch it one more time. then you can paint directly with the flex bumper paint or you can get a flex primer but not really needed.
If it is the hard flares then just scotch brite and any paint will do. preferably a eurothane of some type though. Still has a bit more flex then straight enamel.
I have done this numerous times having owned a body shop and building custom cars, painting boats, etc.
it is all in the prep.

Thanks EMS, I will give them a shot.
Planning on cleaning the fenders in the next day or two then scuffing and painting over the weekend.
I have noticed quite a few guys have painted the fenders on the Jeep by sticking newspaper between the body.
I am thinking of going this route instead of removing all of the fenders.
Any tips I should know before I do this?

|05GT-O.C.D.||The best primer is old paint. Wash them w/ blue Dawn soap. Dry. Get some extremely high grit (smooth) sand paper and lightly sand/scuff the flares. Then repaint.|

Painting fender flares that are body color matched
So as some of you may know, my wife and I bought a 94 YJ a couple weeks ago and are slowly making some changes to the vehicle.
Right now the Jeep is a greenish blue color with painted fender flares that are the same color.
I am thinking the Jeep would look pretty sick w. the fender flares painted black(Fusion sprayed) but am unsure how it would hold to the painted flares.
Should I sand them down as much as possible to remove the old paint and then spray w/ Fusion?
Has anyone painted flares that were already painted and if so how did you go about the process?
