I was down in my hometown today and my buddy has a 2008 Unlimited Rubicon...loved it to say the least
I'm looking into the 4 doors now. Now I just need to find one that I want. Too many damn auto's around here.

A hard top costs about $2,500, mainly shipping is a bear.
A soft top costs about $1,500 now, but you can find them on Ebay for as little as $500 - $600. I bought one today actually for $600.00 new.
As for my opinion.... The Wrangler is by far the best car I have owned. I love it, and I think it may be the only brand car I won for the rest of my life. Go get one

If you're set on an X, I'd only order the farkles from the factory that you can't upgrade better/cheaper in the aftermarket.
I'd get the upgraded stereo & autotrans.
I'd ditch the stock wheels and tires and get 16" aftermarket wheels with 4.5" backspacing -- run 285/75-16 Dunlop Rover M/T Maxx Traction Tires (look them up) and regear to 4.56 gears.
Then add bumpers and other protective/recovery gear as budget allows.
3.73 gears are only good on flatland.

A/T or Stock Rubi Tires
For sure the all terrain tires make less road noise. The mud tires that come stock on the Rubicon are mud tires but if you look closely at the tread, they are designed to reduce road noise because of how they stagger the tread. I call them less aggressive mud tires. Unless you are going to do a serious lift kit and go with bigger tires, I don't know that there is much benefit in having a more aggressive mud tire.
The Rubicon, as it comes out of the box, has some pretty good off road features without any mods. I may eventually begin tinkering with mine but it has been fun driving just the way it is. For the all around type driving that I do, highway, city, and off road, I like the tires I've got that came with the vehicle. I had a Sahara with the A/T tires and like the mud tires better. A little more noise on the highway but well worth it while mud bogging around in the woods.

Thank you so much dude...that helps me out a lot. First things first...I need to sell my Ford Escape before I can buy a new jeep. Then after that I will start to do some negotiating with my dealer. Do you think I should try to get the dealer to give me stock rubi tires or an A/T tire?? Just curious!

the 4:1 gear ratio is lower geared than the Sahara I had and as a result I went from 20 MPG combination highway/city to 18 MPG.
I like all of the handling features.
I have the towing package and have pulled near the weight limit 3000 (limit is 3500) in hilly terrain in New England getting as little as 9.5 MPG to about 12MPG depending on the terrain.
I have the entertainment system upgade and speaker upgrade. Sound system is awsome, it also plays DVD video, has built in GPS, and Satellite stereo. Much better than the Sahara sound system.

Darn tootin' on that standard vs automatic issue.
The more geared down you go (higher number) the easier it will be to creep along slowly especially in 4low. This is very useful especially in tight quarters. The drawback is not as good gas mileage on the geared down version. Higher rpms at highway speeds causing more wear on the engine. It is a tradeoff. Some actually install lower gears than the Rubicon because the are only interested in the off road aspect.

Not a 3 on the tree or anything as I am only 24...but I did learn how to drive a manual when I was 9 years old on a backroad with my dad and I have owned a manual up until the Ford Escape...I think I want to return to the clutch thing...What do you guys think about the other stuff as I know that the manual vs auto discussion could go on for an eternity (as I have seen on other threads lol)|

yah, what 4point says about automatic transmission, if you don't have too good control over your clutch foot now, there are those on this site, me included who feel that there is more control in different situations using a clutch. Problem is most youngsters (<30) probably cut there driving feet on an automatic and don't know how to handle that complex clutch thing So if you buy that automatic well, you'll have to live with it.
This is of course a preference that is totally your own but don't let no automatic enthusiast convince you that that is the best way to go. Or that it is somehow the preferred transmission for wheeling.
Any standard gearheads out there agree with this? Or am I just high on my stick?

As far as the trans, because its seamless in technical situations. No clutch slipping or jerking. Easier to control.
The gears, the higher the number the lower the gear.

|4point||IMO, get the lowest gears available and take another look at the automatic. The auto is actually the preferred transmission for wheeling.|

May be buying a new JK soon...
Hey everyone! Newb here looking for some advice...
So right now I have a 2007 Ford Escape XLT that I got mad at the other day. I was down at my buddy's farm crossing through a muddy trail to go check out the natural gas line that is being put in that is going through his farm. While in the mud my AWD decided it wanted to stop working...long story short I now want a new JK...
I went and test drove one and the first thing I noticed was those god awful OEM tires...I'm gonna try to haggle a new set from the dealer.
I wanted your guys opinion on a few things. I live in Indianapolis..mostly commuting to work but not stop-n-go traffic. I am from Southeastern Indiana and will probably go home and hit a few trails every now and then. Primarily I will be on the road though.
I am thinking about getting the X model S Package in Blue.
+3.73 gears (Don't know if this will really be needed)
+Towing package (this is a maybe)
Any benefits going soft vs hard top?
Do I need the 3.73 gears or will 3.21 do fine?
I know M/T's look meaner but I am thinking maybe about going with an A/T tire...
I think I am pretty set on getting a 6 speed as I just can't picture a jeep as an automatic...maybe I need to drive an auto?
Should I wait till 2010 models start coming out to try and get a better deal (whenever that will be)?
Any thoughts opinions would be great! I want to make this a good purchase and I'm gonna haggle the dealer down as much as I can...I'm willing to walk away as I already have a reliable ride but it sure would be nice to have a new JK!
I'm sorry for all of the questions...I'm gonna have to get them out of the way sooner or later!
