myquite like the others said. Follow the stick to the bottom, and there will be a rubber gasket/cover. Pull this piece up out of the way. There is a small piece that the shifter goes through, brass colored. Push this piece down and turn about an 1/8 to 1/4 turn counter clock wise, the whole stick will pop out. very easy.

Gohot I believe it's counterclockwise once you push down about 1/2 inch as brentd771 says

brentd711 There's a spring-loaded retainer at the base of the shifter. Push it down and turn it until it pops off.

Manual shift lever removal?

How in the world do I remove the shift lever in a 1990 YJ? Need to replace the clutch and cannot get the transmission out without removing the lever and of course can't figure out how to remove the gear shifter. NOTE: not the transfer case shifter the tranny shifter. PLEASE HELP ME!!!
