|peanut09||The last 5 JK's I bought had similar issue. What I noticed is a lot of paint is just not applied or scrapped off for whatever reason. I just picked up a 10A a few weeks ago and the first few days I got under it with some rust-olium just to coat the areas with no paint. I just washed it today and I am going to touch up again just to slow the rust down.|

I agree it doesn't look good but it happens on every vehicle out there, this isn't a defective Jeep phenomenon and it's not a huge deal. If it bothers you a good wire brush job to knock the rust off and a good coat of Fluid Film and you won't have rust there again. I use Fluid Film on all my trucks, it's fairly cheap and it keeps rust at bay.

My dealership offered to fix it for me (paint) but I chose to do it myself. From what socal-jk put on here, I think Chrysler got the message. I used Chassis Saver paint, it cost about $40 a quart but it goes a long way. I used a 1/2" brush and about 3 hrs.
Mine was built in October and I put the first mile on it. I didn't know about it until reading this thread and 600 miles on the Jeep.

Has anyone gotten results from the dealership? I have to say, if they were supposed to rust like that then why waste money on paint? These are Dana 44's that won't last 10 years with this aggressive rust. Mine is a year old this month and it is bad! The paint has bubbles on the diff covers and is flocking away. I am not interested in paying an extra 10 grand for axles that are rusting this fast.
I think we need to do a tally of those willing to pressure Chrysler for a fix on this, or at least warranty them for a lifetime. I feel sick inside
Like I stated, why paint them if they are going to rust? Driveshafts are solid and take a lot of abuse, they are a low cost replacement... These Dana 44's are expensive!

|socal-jk||Mine has so much paint from the factory on the axle tubes they're covered in runs. And scrapes and rusty scrapes...... I will take a pic for you guys. Oh the humanity.......|

|Jstraw||I'm glad I found this thread, I have a JKUR 2013 built in July of 2012 and purchased in August... I have a little over 9000 miles on it. I went to the garage to do my yearly inspection and as I started looking underneath noticing all the rust, I thought to myself, "man, there's a lot of rust for being less then a year old"... Not seconds after I thought that, the inspecting mechanic asked, "what year is this"? I said "2013"...? He said, "that's a whole bunch of rust for a new truck, that's too bad"! Talk about being pissed! My 2002 liberty looks better then this. It has been driven on snowed roads, but washed each time, as well as being garage kept. I paid 40 grand... The rust isn't just on the axles, it's all over the frame as well. There has to be a fix for this or some kind of exchange or extended warranty. I looks just as bad as my old 1956 Chevy did when I got that.|

Bump. Any joy from the dealership? I'm very interested in what Jeep/dealership had to say about this.

|ohioviper||Most of these pics looks like the axles are the primary area of rust. Im not sure where Dana is building these axles now but I used to work for them and it was not uncommon to see axle housings come in from South America that looked like this. The housings are coated with an oily residue from the machine cutting fluid that needs to be cleaned off before paint. If they were not properly cleaned the paint will literally run right off. Its actually not even paint but a soy based coating called ecoat. So take a poor coating that ran off and ship it on the ocean and you will have instant rust. They would also stage the housings or finished axles outdoors in racks to set in the rain to rust. Not sure if Jeep stores them outside but I wouldn't be surprised.Last I knew they were building the axles in Buenos Aires Argentina .|

|AndrewKlein||Salesman is right. I pulled the wheels, washer everything. Dried it. Taped off the discs and calipers and used rustoleum. Some spray and som with a brush. 10000 miles later and a lot is salt and dirt later and I will do again this spring.|

just picked this up 2 days ago
this is my 2013 JKU. i bought it 2 days and 75 miles ago. I just picked up the paperwork 30 minutes before looking under it to check out where the my new nerf bars will attach. it hasn't rained one time. it just got on the lot last week. wtf? I immediately went back to the dealership to check out the other jeeps on the lot and my salesman was out moving a vehicle. he said it was perfectly normal surface rust and showed me some rust on another vehicles rotors. needless to say i am not happy!

|Drumrgal||Has anyone heard of or used this before for rust? (see link) Thinking of trying it under my JK(2013)for the unfortunate rust that is already forming. Looks pretty easy to use & no painting. fluid film review - YouTube|

|Lusus_Naturae||^ Mine looks about as bad as Timberlakes, no salt this winter on the roads either. My TJ didn't look this bad when I sold it this fall. I wish I would have seen this thread and checked it before buying it.|

Going to check under mine too. I have just over 1000K on it. Picked it up March25. I hope it doesn't look as bad as OP!

Had a look under front end of my 13 Sport that i bought Nov 2012, built in Oct 2012.
Was shocked at the rust I saw too. I am going to have a better look under there but here are a few pics. Live in Vancouver Canada. Lots or rain but only 1 time in salt which I cleaned up right away.
