My wife wanted a Wrangler, and I was able to find an affordable one, 90 model, 4 cyl., 5 speed, with no 5th gear. I had rebuilt several manual transmissions in my Rangers and Mustangs, so I said what the hell. I bought it, rebuilt the tranny, and we have enjoyed it from the first day I got it fixed.
Then, the quarreling started over the little red Jeep. We both wanted to drive it to work or around town for the day. As usual, the wife usually wins!!!....
After the last spat with the better half, I started to search for another YJ with a good motor, and a bad tranny. I was lucky enough to find a 93 Wrangler 4 cyl., 5 speed, with a bad tranny. While searching for another Jeep, I bought a motor/tranny from a guy that installed a small block Chevy into his Jeep. The 93 only had 64,xxx original miles, but the tranny exploded at a stop light. I trailered it home, got the 5th gear countergear out of it, repaired the other tranny I had, and within 2 days, had another very nice Wrangler to avoid any more arguing.
We love the Jeeps. Like the other comments in this thread, we only regret not getting one sooner. We have 8 vehicles between the 2 of us (empty nesters, Thank God!!), and we drive the Jeeps more than anything. We both have our pickups, and the little sports cars, and the luxury vehicles also. We have always liked convertibles, and the open air of the soft tops and doors appeal to both of us.
Anyway, go for it, you will not be sorry!!!

|badmpr1||I've always been a MOPAR guy. I've had 3 cars, two trucks, two suv's, a sidekick, a harley, and now, my beloved 2000 TJ Sahara. I freaking love this thing. My fiance totally understands the Jeep thing and wants one herself. But, my family thinks I'm nuts. I hopped in an '09 JK the other day and smashed my head on the soundbar. That was the end of that! I'm stickin with my TJ. Plenty of head room. My 2 best friends both have TJ's and we wheel together whenever we possibly can. My buddy's brother just bought an '08 Silverado Z71 and was mouthin our Jeeps saying he could go anywhere we went. Well, after backing out of the first trail (couldn't fit), he thought he'd take the wet chisel-plowed field around. Like a rock alright, Sunk! Needless to say we laughed our butts off as we did circle's around him and throwin rooster tails at his new truck! He cussed us up and down. I think it hurt his pride a little when everyone around saw him getting pulled out by a JEEP! I wont ever own another brand.|

|daanbc||Well I have had two jeeps prior to the wrangler that I have now. I always liked driving the jeep. But the cj5 and cj7 were just to small for me, and the ride was ruff. Im not even going to go on about the gas milage on the 4-banger I had. But the 2000 sahara i have now. WOW TOTALLY NEW JEEP. It has the four coil springs, no more leaf springs=nicer ride. The 6cyl has lots of torqe and better gas milage. And i fit in it with ease. It's a blast to drive, real tight turning radius. Im glad i gave it another try.|

They are so much fun and you can take them off-road. You can't do that in a muscle car. Don't get me wrong, I like to go fast too. But, I'd rather have something to take off-road.|

|kartgrl31||Keep looking, I was always one for speed and show because I'm young. Last summer I was working on my car so I used my dad's jeep or the charger (yes hemi r/t is there any other way to go?) when it rained and couldn't take the motorcycle. In the end we fought more over the jeep than we did the charger for the simple fact you can do more. After that I got my jeep and wont go back. Fast cars are great, but I still have a show truck for speed and the bike. Gas milage sucks but it is well worth it, besides, if you mod a car enough you get low mileage anyway, and as a commuter, its not bad, you get used to it.|

Won't be getting this one soon...
I was right. I went to look at the Jeep today and it had major hail damage. The hood has huge dents as well as the frame around/above the windshield. The windshield is also broken in a couple of spots. I don't know if I could get it at a big discount after it was repaired or if If I should just walk away from this one. They aren't doing anything on their vehicles until Sunday, after the insurance people inspect them. The dealership is Covert Cadillac and their entire lot is tore up. I've never seen so many Escalades and CTS's with busted out windows and dents everywhere.
For now, the hunt for my Jeep continues...

|dj_chizzle||i finally got a jeep after years of driving sport compact cars with power windows, air conditioning, great sound systems, the works. i don't miss those perks at all. as you already know from having driven jeeps before, they can be noisier, dirtier and bumpier to drive than almost any other modern car you will pass on the road. it's one of those things where you either love it or hate it.|

Wow, keep em coming!
I am enjoying reading these posts and they are reinforcing what I already thought, that I will love my new Jeep when I get it. I live in Round Rock Texas, but grew up in Austin (just a few miles away) and enjoy cruising the downtown/Zilker Park areas weekly and can imagine doing it topless will be even more fun. I work a compressed work week (3 days on 4 days off and then vica versa the next week) so I have A LOT of cruising time.
On a side note, we just had one of, if not the worst, hail storms ever for this area. The news anchorman that was reporting live tonight was at the intersection of where the used car lot is that has the Jeep I'm going to look at tomorrow. I attached a pic of the Jeep. It's a 2008, AT, 4WD, with 5K miles, and a soft top. They have it listed for $21,000 but have it as an internet special for $19,000. If it was not under a roof, it WILL be a hail damaged vehicle when I see it tomorrow. They were showing video of the car lot and there was extensive hail damage and windows busted out of vehicles. I'll attach a pic of the size of the hail we had. Thanks again for the posts. I'm looking forward to submersing myself into this hobby!

|cret0013||my story on how i got my jeep: wanted a jeep, realized they are way to pricy for a student to buy so all depressed i was going to buy a crappy used neon, but before I went to go get it my cousin called me and said he heard i wanted a jeep and would sell me his for 700$ (Canadian), so ya I got a 97 tj four banger with 102k with both tops for 700$ and honestly I’m probably never going to buy any other type of vehicle ever.|

|rkwfxd||I regret waiting 30 years to buy my first jeep. I truly believe that 30 years from now I will still have the same kids, still be married to the same woman, still be riding the same Harley and still drive this same jeep. Don't know about anything else but I feel real confident in those four things.|

Mine is an 08 Sahara Unlimited Rubicon 4 door six speed manual transmission. I have both the hard top and soft top. I have said a lot about it in the JK forum. Go to my profile and check out my posts if you have a lot of time.
It is my only car. I drive it all over the place. On road and off road. In my opinion, it is the most off road jeep that has been produced as a factory stock vehicle. The tires are a little louder than the ones that come with the Sahara Unlimited but very tolerable. I commute to the city for my job. I don't find that a problem. Bottom line, you have to figure out what you are looking for in a vehicle.
I'm not looking to sell mine any time soon. I'm having too much fun with it.

Yeah, there is a certain part of society that "don't understand". I'm freakin' 44 years old and my mother thinks I'm nuts. I get the "those things are dangerous" talk a lot.
She just remembers the (sorry about this CJ guys) "bad old days" of the CJ-5's turtling on the freeway and killing everyone involved.
So, not everyone is going to agree with what you want to do. My best jeep buddies think I'm nuts for certain things, but what are ya gonna do?
You only get one life. Go live it. If a Jeep's part of what you want in it, get one.

I've always been a truck person, it was just so convenient to be able to throw all my crap in the back but I always wanted a jeep. Finally about a year ago, my tacoma got recalled because the frame was rusted out and they gave me a nice little check for it so I decided to get a jeep. I haven't regretted it once. There's nothing like taking the top and doors off on a nice day and getting a little muddy or cruising on the beach.
The only drawbacks i've noticed are jeeps are expensive. Not necessarily because they are lemons or anything, but once you start putting money into them, you always want to do something else. The possibilities are endless. If you've got money and you want a fun new hobby then jeeps are for you.
The only other drawback is they are terrible commuter vehicles. They are built for offroad and that's what they are good for. I don't know about the JK's, they seem a little more road friendly to me but I haven't driven one yet.
But if you do a lot of travelling, I would suggest having a second vehicle or keeping yours stock or close to it. Good luck, hope you make the right choice (Jeep it)

|Jp90Talon||I own a 93 civic Si hatch that is zippy and great on gas and a 92 plymouth laser awd that is heavily modded but has become more the auto-x/drag strip only car that occasionally sees the streets. With all these to choose I still love the jeep...crappy gas milage and all!|

i own a 06 charger rt and still find myself loving driving my jeep more =D
id rather get rid of my car than get rid of my jeep.. even though its got battle scars and 84k miles more than my car..

|jdhallissey||I drove a mustang and jeeps are fun. This is my first and I wouldn't trade it for the world. Go for it, if you want something fast this is not for you. Keep another vehicle for that like i am. Like I said I am having a blast with my jeep.|

1st time Jeep owners, are you enjoying it?
I know most answers will be positive seeing that I'm asking the question on a Jeep forum. I'm trying to buy my first Jeep and the majority of people I mention it to look at me like I'm crazy and say I'll regret it. I've never owned one, but I've driven plenty of them and THINK I'll enjoy it a lot. I've always had vehicles that were fun like mini trucks and suped up imports and now find myself 35 years old in a Chevy Impala. I don't mean to offend other Impala owners but I feel like a pen salesman when I pull up in it. I wanted a Jeep for years but have never made the move to get one. I'd like to hear from first time Jeep owners about there experiences and the good/bad about there new Jeeps. Thanks in advance!
