|chrislewis||Well gentlemen, one of the screw holes in my steering wheel for the puller stripped while pulling.... I now don't know what to do... I'm thinking about taking it to my Mexican mechanic, maybe he can pull it out somehow|

|Zinger||So - are you replacing the entire column (upper and lower sections) all the way down to the box? If so, here is my experience on the lower half. You need to FULLY remove the the bolts at the connection joints (mid-point at the bearing and at the steering box.) The shaft has a relief the bolt passes through. If you only loosen the bolt it will not separate. The bearing bracket (half way down the shaft) located inside the fender on the frame has a bolt which can be hard to access. Pry up or even cut the rubber like liner between the fender and the frame (looking over your tire behind the spring) to access it. Spray all you bolts down with PB Blaster a few times the week prior to the removal. Remember - if you have the lower shaft disconnected - DON"T SPIN your steering wheel - you'll ruin your clock spring.|

|All Terrain JK||I had to re-center my clock spring a couple weeks ago. I rented a steering wheel puller from Autozone for $20. The whole removing the airbag and steering wheel thing sounds a lot worse than it is.|

|surferbear||I don't know how many times you will pull a steering wheel but Harbor Freight has a steering wheel puller kit for uber-cheap, don't remember exactly how much, about 20 bucks I think.|

|chrislewis||Alright awesome. I appreciate the help. Do you know if pre 2000 requires a steering wheel puller? I know the write ups that used pullers were all 2000+. And one video even said this is for 2000 and newer, so you'll need a steering wheel puller|

I just did this last week and can't remember. If my Jeep was here, I'd go check.
EDIT: But I must have used an 'fractional inch' size socket because I don't have any 21mm or 22mm sockets

I definitely have the lock cylinder part down, tried replacing that ignition pin about 20 times before i discovered the cracked column lol i think i can almost do it with my eyes closed.
Now, this steering wheel business. Is it a 20mm? I can do everything EXCEPT get this steering wheel off. I'm about to go grab a socket for it, but knowing the size would be nice. I know its under 24 and over 18

Here's a great write-up to remove the whole dash.
TJ Heater Core Replacement - 1
No. 3 in this write-up has all the information you will need to take out the steering column.
Before you start, make sure you have an extended length 13mm socket. You can get the steering column out with a 13mm wrench but it is infinitely easier with an extended socket.
Once the steering wheel is out, it will spin extemely easily. You want to avoid it moving to prevent damage to the clockspring so be careful when you take it out and put it down.
I found it easier to remove the ignition cylinder first.
1. Disconnect battery
2 If you have an Auto, select PARK
3 Rotate key to ON position
4 There is a release button on the bottom of the ignition cylinder.
5 There is an access hole on the bottom half of the plastic steering column shroud.
Push a small screwdiver/allen key/punch up into the access hole to trip the release button while pulling the key cylinder at the same time.
6 It's very easy to reinstall the ignition cylinder (it can only be replaced one way).
Good luck - but definately do yourself a favor and get an extended 13mm socket first

Steering wheel and Steering column
So, my new steering column got here yesterday, and I'm about to do my swap. Unfortunately I have no idea what I'm doing. I mean, I have decent mechanical skills and easily understand the way things work, I normally just take things apart and put them back together, but there is an airbag involved in this one... Has anyone done a write up on steering wheel removal AND steering column removal and replacement? I'm about to start mine this week, I would like one to follow, if I can't find one, I guess I'll just make one for everyone else!
