My turn........ but.... I picked up my Jeep second week of February. At just about 500 miles, the fuse popped for the circuit that controlled some of the steering wheel/column functions.
I drove the Jeep to Florida when I had about 600 miles on it and upon my return was up to about 4000. The fuse did not blow and I had full functions (minus the dome lights) since. I had decided that I would wait until my first service to have the issue checked out.
So it begins. During the last week of March, I had an appointment for my first service and to have the electrical issue looked into. The tech was unable to find anything specific and needed more time. My Service Rep asked me to come back when they can keep the Jeep longer for more diagnostics to fix it.
Before I said anything, he up front offered me a loaner for the duration of the repair. The only thing he asked is that I throw him a reminder call on the Friday before my appointment this past Monday (sure, I shouldn't have to, but I wasn't leaving without a loaner).
I dropped the Jeep off Monday, was able to have a nice conversation with the technician. We spoke of clocksprings and pinched harnesses. He said he will be checking my entire wiring harness. So off I go in a Jeep (gas pig) Liberty.
End of day on Monday, phone call - haven't found the problem. End of day on Tuesday - Ruled out certain possibilities, still no definitive cause. End of day on Wednesday - the instrument cluster has the short and needs to be replaced. The problem is that they cant get one until next Tuesday for two reasons. 1. Availability. 2. The new cluster must be programed with my mileage, and then somehow certified (might be a state thing).
The tech was probably more upset about this than I. This will be a week that he now loses access to a loaner for other customers for way longer than he hoped. I'm a patient man, and my theory, which I expressed clearly, quality over speed. Take the time to do it right once.
So, I am now playing the waiting game. So far, I have not had to fight for anything about this from the service dept, from getting the repair done to a loaner. Hopefully it works out with no residual issues.

You also mention that your jeep isn't a daily driver. I wanted mine to be a daily driver, atleast in the winter, because of its 4 wheel drive capabilities. I drive a truck and my hometime is precious to me. Sometimes the roads are nearly impassable, and the extra traction is really nice. Until you get to where a semi laying on its side is blocking the highway for hours, anyhow. Which always seems to happen.
That said, i've had no electronics problem in my jeep other than that whole thing where i had to spit on my gas cap to make the gas cap light go out.

As far as a TJ is concerned, if it has some issues, it's not as big of a deal. It will be old and have a bunch of miles on it, so you expect it. You don't expect it on a 2.5 year old vehicle with 18k on the clock, at any price. The TJ will also not be my daily driver, so I won't have to depend on it.

If it makes you feel any better, I do think I'll save for a while and pick up a nice TJ for bad weather. I love Jeeps. Always have, always will. But my experience on the JK has soured me to them, and ever giving Chrysler my money in the future. I don't expect anyone else to feel how I do unless they're been through the same things.

This is why you reasearch a vehicle. I know many on this site bash consumer reports and JD Power and others for rating Jeep with higher defects per 100 than other manufacturers. Heck Land Rover has the worst but people still buy them.
You take your chances with any vehicle builder but you have better odds with some than others. I too have had a bad Chrysler but I have had 4 good ones too.
Still Jeep does have higher defects than others and both Chrylser and Fiat rate worse than many manufacturers. Hard core enthusiasts will forgive defects because they love the brand so much. Lets face it. There is no competition for the Wrangler. Name another convertible 4x4 SUV. How about one as capable off road?
To me the defect rating is like how many bullets you put in a pistol to play Russian Roulett. Do you want 3 bullets or 1? Die hard brand loyalists will point out that there are many who never have a defect but ignore the people that did. These reporting agencies simply report the numbers. Can you have a defective Honda and a problem free Jeep, yes but the manufacturer history shows you have a better chance of having a defective Jeep than Honda.
Since mine is not a daily driver and although I am a fan of Honda, they don't make a Wrangler. So for the fun factor, I put another bullet in, pulled the trigger and got a click. Mr Sinister got a bang.
PS research your future TJ well, there is no guarantee that you will find one that is problem free, although they are relatively easy to fix.

legitposter: It's already done. I didn't want to draw the process out, because I truly am upset about having to trade it. I considered a new Jeep, but I will not give Chrysler any more of my money. I have always loved Jeeps, and always will. It's just a bit of a shame in my mind to see the current state of affairs with not only Chrysler, but man big companies, and what they consider an acceptable level of service to their customers. I won't say what I did get, but I bought from a brand that we currently own a car from, and one we have owned cars in that past with, and they have always been top notch for us.

Mr Sinister, go trade the Jeep in like you said. You might be sad on the drive there but you won't even think about it once you're in a nice new.. reliable.. vehicle. I've gotten lucky with Jeeps but am now on my first Wrangler. If it gives me trouble then I'll be gone like you.
Have you considered a Ford? It's the only American company doing things right it seems.

If you were actually blessed with the ability to comprehend what you read, you would have understood that I was very complimentary of the level of service I received from the Service Writer at NCJ.
Where I was NOT complimentary was at the upper levels of the dealership. I should NOT have to ask for a rental, the dealer should be offering, then sorting the matter out with Chrysler. This is COMMON fare with pretty much every other dealer I've had to get a rental from. That is called CUSTOMER SERVICE, and sticking up for your customers after the sale. This is also how you win repeat customers. Only when the dealership knew that Chrysler would cover a rental, did they even consider this. We're not talking a day or two, we're talking THREE WEEKS. NEVER did I criticize any tech, service writer, or salesman.
I am also very disappointed with Chrysler for not only failing to stock parts for their vehicles so situations like this never happen, but also their failure to hold their parts manufacturers responsible for producing for them. Since I'm sure you don't know, Chrysler, and many other manufacturers operate a "Just In Time" business model, which means they are really reluctant to stock parts, as this can be construed as costing them money. JIT manufacturing relies on being able to produce needed parts ON THE FLY, not in THREE DAMN WEEKS. So Chrysler saves money on not storing inventory, but now they're out 2.5 weeks of rental coverage. Can you understand the flaws here?
Lastly, I am HIGHLY disappointed in the Representatives Chrysler puts in the field. I was told by the Regional Rep that he could get this process expedited, and I was assured I'd have my vehicle back before the 20th, which was the original completion date. I shook the man's hand on it. Well, he DID technically keep his word, I got my Jeep back one day early. So when I posted about my meeting with him, and noted he seemed nervous and fidgety, it's probably because he knew he was lying straight to my face, and just telling me what I wanted to hear to get me out of there. He knew damn well this issue wasn't going above him, and it obviously never did. I had not even mentioned him since because I understood that I'm a nobody to a huge Corporation like Chrysler, as are you, as are all owners. But since you're stoking the fire, there you go.
If you call that an acceptable level of service, you simply do not know what good customer service is. So unless you have a little better argument to make, I suggest you go troll somewhere else.

|SLICE55||First of all, I too live in Fair Hill Md. So you had a short in your cluster, took it to the dealer. The dealer ordered you the part under warranty, the dealer got the part and installed it. But just not fast enough for you. So you "BASH" Newark Chrysler. It seems they did everything needed to please you, but that's not enough. You know that dealership has a very good reputation,with some of the best techs in the area.You know the dealer does not build cars and are not responsible for problems they may have. You should probably go over there and apoligize. Then trade your 2010 on a 2013 (see Ivan)|

Thanks man, I may still post from time to time, and I may get another Jeep down the road, just an older and less complex one. I'm sure stories like this happen with all brands.
