I live in DeLand. Parts are decent, others....not so much.
Deltona is a cesspool of human suffering. The only improvement that can be made to that "city" is to dig it under and start from scratch. Google X Box murders.
Orange City.....eh, not horrible depending on the area. Most of the apartments there are pretty sketchy (I worked at the local high school for a while and dealt with some of the kids that lived in them....kids you don't want near you).
Altamonte, Lake Mary, Longwood, etc. kind of run into one another and driving around them isn't much better than driving I4.
Depending on where you're at in Orlando, it wouldn't be horrible to live there. Pine Hills....no. Also, depending on where you go, Daytona may be too big of a commute.
My wife works in Lake Mary and we've considered, on more than occasion, moving to Daytona or New Smyrna Beach and gave up on it after considering her commute.
Like was said above, I4 isn't bad if don't drive like the jackasses out there and in most cases you can do a 15 mile commute in 15 minutes. However, there are those days when a jackass ruins someone else's day and everyone else's day gets ruined with them. In those instances where traffic comes to a stand still, it's good to have a knowledge of the side roads. I've purposely gone out of my way because there was a less travelled scenic route.

|jeepermatt||I would say to try the umatiila/eustis/mt.dora area. Low crime, houses are reasonable, good four wheeling opportunities, and the commute to Orlando Daytona and other areas is not that bad, and you can stay off of i4.|

I've lived in Seminole County on and off most of my life. I4 isnt that bad if your not an a-hole driver, lean back, give plenty of room and relax, it may take you an extra :15 some days.
Deltona is cheap, halfway between orlando and daytona, minutes from beaches. sanford is closer to orlando, lots of stuff to do, and a fun area to wheel in fairly close by.
south orlando area gets deep in to the spanish speaking culture, Im not as familiar.

|MTDora||Mount Dora is awesome. They are expanding the highways out this way and the drive is easy into Orlando. Low crime and affordable houses, plus close to Ocala National Forrest|

Where are you going to work in Orlando? There are ways into town that do not require an I-4 route.
Used to live on S/W Orange county but it became VERY Expensive and to many Lambo's running around.
Moved to Osceola County for 14 years and it sure changed (no habla).
Always swore I would NEVER live in Seminole County and fight the I-4 southbound crawl. Well I have been doing it for 4 years now and have come to accept it. I wave at the other jeeps in traffic and feel just a little smug knowing I could hit the side and run like hell. If the traffic is to bad I take the 417 and make an end run around it all.
Every area I have lived in had crime. In Lake Mary it doesn't seem as bad and there are houses that are not a break the bank kind of deal.

|JRoweMDN||I would second Lake county. You need to say where you are working to get real help. Oviedo is not bad on the east side. Clermont is good on the west side. There are good places in Osceola county to the south.|

Just like anywhere the areas around here have good/bad areas within them, so I am only speaking in general terms.
Having moved to Deltona a year ago, I'd say steer clear. The houses are cheap, but it'll probably get broken into. Plus there's no restaurants.
Deland, not much better unless you're downtown or going to Stetson. Sanford is where Trayvon Martin got shot, as do many others that don't make national news... Lake Mary/Heathrow is expensive. Orange City might be OK.
If I were looking to move locally, I'd probably go towards Oveido/Chuluota or one of the many "in between" rural type areas like SR 415. Port Orange and places like that are OK, but closer to the Daytona side.
Trust me on this: Learn the back roads and ways around I4, especially if you plan to commute from the direction of Daytona. That road will eat your soul, spit it out and make you punch babies. Terrible, terrible drivers and conditions.
Hope I've helped a little, and good luck with the move.

I have a job interview next week in Orlando. If all goes well, will be relocating from Northeast Alabama. What are some good areas to look at outside of Orlando. Not wanting a $300,000 house. Just a nice area with good school. Would prefer to be out of orlando and going towards daytona area. Thanks for any info guys and gals.
