Black_and_Tan Haven't heard the whistle noise since I posted above, but paying close attention.

DallasJKU I just hope my '15 never experiences that noise like my '13 did so many times.

Welcome to the world of water pump failure

Definitely a water pump issue. Mine did this with like 2900 miles on the clock. Took it to the dealer (I self diagnosed it as impeller bearings on the waterpump failing) Dealer knew it was a known issue and they fixed it no questions asked. I think Chrysler issued a MSB on this. If so I would just go down there and ask.

My 2014 whistles just faintly at idle. It's been driving me nuts. I couldn't figure out where it was coming from because I can only hear it in the cab. I'll be sure to listen to the water pump next time I hear it.

Its the water pump. I know that sound well. I had mine replaced 3 times in a year. I traded my '13 Sport in for a '15 Rubicon and I will hope that this one doesn't have the same issues. I wasn't willing to keep my Sport since I figured it was a sign of things to come after the warranty ended.

Black_and_Tan Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but is this an issue on '14's?

Heard slight whistling this morning ... and immediately thought of the water pump problem.

2014 w/just under 10k.

Whistling sound

I have a 2000 Wrangler with the same issue. I replaced the fan belt idle pulley. You could also replace just the bearing instead of the whole pulley. It was a $15.00 fix. Noise is gone. Hope that helps!

JulietKilo My 2013 Rubicon is on it's 3rd water pump. It has about 13,000 miles on it now. Last time the dealer gave me a hard time about it cause the tech couldn't hear the noise. They replaced it at my insistence and the noise stopped. Would be nice if Jeep could manufacture a reliable water pump.

michwags19 Dealer changed water pump. Seems to have solved the problem but time will tell.

Thought I was going to have one of those, "Are you serious"/come to jesus talks with the dealer when he said he couldn't hear the whistle/squeak.

michwags19 Any updates on this issue? My 2012 JKU with 26K has started to whistle. Like others on here, it appears to only whistle at idle. Very embarrassing when sitting in a parking lot and I'm not very happy. I am calling dealer this week and want to be able to point them in the right direction - towards the water pump. anyone else still having issues? Especially those of you who already had the 'newer' pump installed in the fall of 2013.

LewdDude My dealer just ordered a pump for my 2013 JK... hoping it's the revised edition...LOL

xirtic I just got my Jeep back this evening.....they installed pump #3. It is the revised part this time. I am hoping for better results this time.

MotorCityJK Has anyone tracked their coolant temps via the upgraded EVIC? I'm seeing intermittant temps around 212-215 then dropping back to 199-204° (mid 60's ambient outdoor). At one point idling for 5 min I saw 224°. I'm wondering if it's an air pocket.

dalearyous taking it in did suck! we have one of the worst shops here (infamous) and i always get paranoid. plus they don't give out rentals and the shuttle is worthless!
09-10-2013 11:09 AM
MotorCityJK What a PITA. I'm not overly worried since it's under warranty but the b.s. involved with taking it in sucks. If the pump was cheaper I'd consider just doing it myself.

Lbear Chrysler has had a slew of bad water pumps. Mine was replaced for this issue and then I started losing coolant. Turns out the pump housing was bad too- cracked. Dealer tells me they have now beefed up the housing.

Heysus Same here, at the time I had about 3k miles.

They bled the cooling system, confirmed there were no air bubbles then ordered a water pump.

After the water pump replacement I have yet to hear the whistle again.

Replaced under warranty as well. JKUR.

MotorCityJK I think our '14 JKUR w/ less than 500 miles on it has this noise. Just started a couple days ago (or just noticed it a couple days ago). I'll try the suggestion of checking the coolant level but we had a water pump replaced under warranty at 15k miles and the noise is aggravatingly similar. It's very intermittant at this point so I'll likely need to wait a bit to take it in for a check. Loud enough that I can hear in the background while on the phone with my wife and she's on bluetooth (was in a drivethru)

crhb81 I have a 2013 Unlimited. Just bought it used with 15,000 kms three days ago. It didn't make the noise on my test drive, but I drove it an hour and a half to get home, and when I jumped out at home it was whistling like crazy.

If this is indeed the water pump, as most of the others seem to be, is it fair to say dealers are all covering the replacements under warranty?

dalearyous water pump ordered for me too. its on back order but appears to be a common issue.
07-03-2013 09:28 AM
Heysus Took mine in and a water pump has been ordered for me too. We'll see if that fixes it.

Jasvan Took my 2013 Rubi in today about chirp and water pump is on order and supposed to be in next week. Luckily my dealership is giving me a rental for the day. I only hear it when it's in park and I get out. Sounds bad.
06-19-2013 06:50 PM
Wingsnut72 My rubi has been diagnosed with a bad water pump. There was a chirp coming from the engine, and took it in on Monday. They drained the coolant, refilled, and then verified no air in the system. The chirp was still there. The pump is on back order. They'll call when it comes in.

THW Just got back from the water pump swap. My whine is officially gone. Just wanted to update the thread.
06-18-2013 12:38 AM
jnolan88 It goes away with throttle like around 2500-3000 and up. Not sure about the lights never heard a change it pitch.
06-18-2013 12:02 AM
THW Could be the water pump- maybe we just have different pitches? Mine also only really happens at idle or low RPMs (or maybe I just can't hear it at speed?) But yours sounds more like a pulley or belt screech or something to me... Does it go up in pitch with RPMs? Does it change pitch when you turn on your brights? Could be the alternator?
06-17-2013 11:52 PM
jnolan88 Thanks. Mine sounds way louder. Idk what it could be now. Only happens at idle or very low rpms. And not all the time.
06-17-2013 11:23 PM
THW Not really. Yours sounds louder and more constant. Here's a video of mine. (I hadn't figured out the source of the noise yet when I recorded this; hence the camera searching all over the place and me trying to bounce the bumper at the end to see if the noise would change )

Mine's scheduled for a water pump swap on Wednesday morning. I'll post back here to follow up afterwards.

jnolan88 Just gotta video of mine making noise. Did it sound like this?
