NJJeeper thanks man! i just need to find where I can get about 30 sq. ft. of vinyl leather. Because after I wrap the dash, I was going to fashion up some seat covers as well (more like riping off that fugly spice/rio grande cloth and completely re-doing them). I was going to do the stitching in orange to match the body of the ol' jeep too, which I think should look pretty sweet.

Man, home-ec in high school is finally coming in handy. Now I kind of feel like a deusch for telling that teacher her job was a joke.

Double-Din Fiberglass Dashboard for Navigation/DVD

A little project I found myself throwing money into..

Ok, so first of all, we all know the YJ dash is a little less than beautiful, and if anyone ever changes it, it's usually to make it more CJ like. However, I, personally don't like either the CJ OR YJ dashboards, so I decided to make my own. I wanted to update the look of the dash so it looked like it was more with the times. I am also interested in a Double-Din DVD/Navigation/Bluetooth unit (i think im gonna go with the Pioneer Premier AVIC-F90BT). The problem was that the opening for the existing radio beneath the gauges is too small, and even if i opened it up, I would be looking at the floor to see the screen... which is why I designed this instead. Plus, in the process, I am lifting the radio up so that in case I found myself in some deep puddles, I'm a little safer.

So..what I decided to do was to modify the existing upper dashpad, and fiberglass a double-din opening into it that would be big enough to install the nav/dvd/stereo unit i want. (The final product will be wrapped in stitched pleather for water-resistance and and to prevent sun-fading to the dash).

First, I had to start by marking where I had to cut into the original dash to fit the rear portion of the unit (got the dimensions of the unit off the pioneer website, still saving for the unit itself)...

Here was the hard part.. Actually cutting into the dash..Point of no return..

I got a Double-Din installation kit for a Mazda 3 because the shape seemed good. I then drilled holes outside the area I cut out and used 1/4 inch dowel rod to mount the shroud a sufficient distance from the dash. (I'm an idiot.. I accidently mounted it upside down in the picture. I turned it around though!)

I went to a fabric shop and got the stretchiest material I could get and wrapped it from the edged of the dash, up and over the shroud, and back over the other side. Once I did that, I Threw down one layer of fiberglass resin, then once it hardened I begun to put layers of fiberglass cloth onto the resin and another layer of resin on top.

Here's what I have so far after 2 layers of fiberglass.

I think it needs about 2 more layers of fiberglass, then it should be rigid enough for the next step. After that dries, I have to go to home depot and get some 1/2" flexible foam to layer on top of the fiberglass for a cushiony, plush feel. Then, like I said, I'll have stitched pleather stretched over the foam for a nice factory-like finish. I'll post more pics as I go along.. but so far, its looking pretty nice.
