Goofyjumper Your biggest problem is going to be wheelbase.... Early CJ's are short which makes them hard to stuff newer engine/transmission/transfer-case combinations in them because most newer setups are longer.

You may be able to take what you have an make them more reliable with some simple rebuild options. I took my CJ's AMC engine and rebuilt it and then added Howell's throttle body injector (TBI) kit. This basically modernized the engine with a computer controlled fuel injection. Now it starts like a champ just a like a new jeep.

I also rebuilt the transmission and transfer case. These take about a weekend each and are not that hard to do with the right tools.

CJ-5 Overhaul

I'm looking to update my '67 CJ-5. I want something more modern with parts that are easier to maintain/have better reliability. Transmission, suspension, transfer case, and engine...everything's getting overhauled. Any suggestions about what I should do? Part of me was thinking about getting new jeep parts like the pentastar 3.6L and 5spd transmission. I'm not sure if that's even possible, but I suppose you'll set me straight.

Should I switch over to GM parts like
-Chevy 350
-NP205 tranfer case
-SM465 transmission

Thanks in advance!
