jefferyfghezzi You may try an auto upholster or a marine canvas shop. They can do wonders with vinyl and plastic. I had a rear window sewn in an old leather top on a MGA some years ago.

Ugh!

Two days ago some A-hole broke into my jeep to take our amp and sub that we had just purchased, the first thing that I said was "why didn't they just unzip it?" I have a soft top and knew something was bound to happen. I was so mad that we have security in our complex and they didn't notice anything. Especially since I was the 3rd vehicle this week to get broke into. Anyways, I will be trying to get the window material to do my windows myself because after having to go out and purchase a brand new system, a whole new top is out of the question. Does anyone know what the windows are made of and where I can purchase that stuff?

harleyharv I got cut into last October and all three doors were unlocked. They took a cheep sterio. I put some clear duct tape over the cut, waiting for some sliders to show up on Craig's list.

browneisthenewblack I also had my passenger side half door window cut (last night). It was an "L" shaped cut, and they must have reached their arm inside searching for the door lock. Problem is, the doors were unlocked and i had removed the back window two days earlier. The WHOLE back end of the vehicle was wide open and the doors were unlocked and some maniac with a pocket knife still cut my window to hell. I started researching replacement skins for the frame that is in good shape and it seems that they are priced new between $50 and $75. Not nearly what i thought i was going to have to pay. Let us all make it a point to catch these mothers in the act. O what a day that would be.

350chevrolet i only have one thing that is not locked down in my jeep... an old wooden bat, my anti theft system.

Jerry Bransford Two things to keep in mind... 1) Something that I was told many years ago by both the cop that wrote up a crime report when my top was slashed to gain entrance, and by the top shop that replaced the top (a Triumph TR-6 sports car).... never EVER lock the doors on a convertible equipped vehicle. That just invites a thief to cut the top or windows so he can look around or take what he saw through the windows. And 2) never leave anything of value in plain sight. That will just increase the odds of someone wanting to get in to steal it.

I now keep all my valuables locked up in my Tuffy glove box, Tuffy console liner, or Tuffy rear underseat security drawer.

Spy Hunter TJ Thanks for all your responses. I ended up buying replacements from Best top. Of Course they only come in pairs but for $212 for both thats not too bad...

marc1kim I just bought some new door skins for my TJ on Ebay $99 bucks (plus ship) for the pair. They are made by Rough Country, but Don't know if it's true...I've heard that bestop makes all the aftermarket tops for everyone (smittybuilt, Rough Country, etc)

hulud44 apparently even Velcro is too much for some assholes. i had some one cut out my entire wind jammer just to take a stock stereo that was 7 years old...

BARKDOG67 well if you have some skills you could probably cut out the stitching and buy some plastic and restitch it. some of the stitching on my soft op is dry rotted I removed the old stitching on top and restitched it on top took me a few days but now it dose no leak anymore. I don't see whey you couldn't do it with the window it will just be time consuming but worth it knowing you saved all that loot.

tdm Hate to hear about crap like this happening.

Before you pony up for new uppers, try talking with an upholstery shop…the ones who do boat canvass are very good with plastic window replacement. They may be much cheaper than the whole new upper.

Good luck.

JJTF Hate to hear it, frustrating I know; I'll share one to make you feel better, some @ss clown cut my back window to have a look in, presumably saw the stock stereo and kept going down the block (6 cars hit that night, 2 Jeeps). In the time between the cut & me finding it the next morning some damn cat decided to crawl in and "mark territory" on the driver seat. Still smell it on hot days...

I've heard this several times myself. Don't ever leave anything in your jeep worth stealing, it'll sure get stolen.

I bought my first Wrangler - a '97- about 2 months ago. The fella I bought it from had it parked on the side of a high-traffic highway with a for-sale sign on it - nothing in it to steal, doors unlocked. Some kids cut the driver window and driver-side rear passenger window (Bestop brand) while it sat out there for no apparent reason. Rather than fix, I immediately bought a used hardtop and hard upper doors and scrapped what was left of the softtop. At $800 new for the hard uppers and $2k for the hardtop, at least insurance will cover replacement of said parts if they were damaged in a break-in. I can't imagine insurance will cover a softtop, but it's worth a shot. It really bums me that crooks are so stupid, they'll cut the windows to get in rather than unzip them, or at least jiggle the door handle first; most jeepers know to leave them unlocked. F**kers......

nater344 Check with your insurance company...they may pay for it.

jgano23 unfortunately you cannot replace just the plastic "window" you need to replace the whole skin. i would check ebay or craigslist or the "for sale" section of the forum to see if any one is getting rid of some skins or an entire upper door.

FFBrianS I think you're screwed. I've always wondered why people find it necessary to force their way into a vehicle that they could get into by UNZIPPING A ZIPPER. It's bad enough to have some @$$hole in your car, its even worse if that @$$hole unnecessarily cuts the window. I make it a habit to never keep anything in my Jeep and never keep the doors locked. I live in the Chicago area and have only had a problem once in 10 years. Anyway, you can replace the upper door shell easily enough, it stretches over the existing metal frame...but it's not cheap.

Hope this helps.

Cut Plastic Windows??!!

Some Fu*#ing a-hole cut my plastic window. I have a 97 TJ with the soft top and the half front doors. The window cut was the passenger front. The Fabric surround is still fine but the clear plastic is now ruined? Does anyone know if I can buy just the clear plastic? Installation tips? My top is a best top so does that mean I have to buy best top plastic? Thanks for your feedback.
