st1264 OP, post what amp you are using and match it with the power required for the sub and the enclosure volume...

JL Audio 8W1v2-4 only needs .375 cu/ft according to their website. It's cheaper than the "shallow mount" subs too. Find out the dimensions of the sub and you are on track. I always loved the JL "tight" bass sound. Then again, I've always been into 10"+ subs which will hit lower frequencies. You are just limited by size unfortunately. But having the 8" will put you into a tiny enclosure. Hope this works for you.

Moabite Polks deserve a mention here...great speakers. I just finished mounting an 8" MM840D in the stock enclosure on a new JK yesterday...not sure how it matches up with your enclosure though. Check it out at Crutchfield. It will be driven by a separate amp.

Soundy All that said, it's also not so critical that you have to be within .001% of spec. A couple dozen cubic inches either way probably won't have a substantial (get it? SUBstantial?? AHAHAHAHA) effect on performance. It's not like the wrong size box will necessarily destroy the sub either - just the farther you get away from "ideal", the further you get from optimal performance of your driver(s). A sub in an almost-right enclosure may sound just fine... but transfer it into a better box closer to its ideal, and suddenly it sounds FRAKKIN' AMAZING.

When you're starting with the enclosure, picking the right sub *to match it* could mean the difference between good sound and GREAT sound.

Rather than guessing, figure out the actual volume of the sub enclosure, then find a sub with a "Vas" spec that's close to it (don't forget to subtract the space taken by the sub itself).
Ah thank you for correcting me. This will change my decisions as well.

It's not the mounting depth that's the problem it's the interior volume of the enclosure. The console is a naturally small space and shallow mount subs are designed to work in enclosures with smaller amounts of air space. Combined with the already small space and the more air displaced by a regular sized sub, a regular 8 will likely not work well in there, unless you find one thats designed to work in small spaces. I'm not really sure what the volume is like inside of those Tuffy boxes though.

coastalwrangler You'll want to go with a shallow mount since there's not a lot of air space in a center console box. I'm about to do the same build and am considering the Pioneer 8" or the Kenwood 8".

Jeffreybomb Coincidentally, I was considering that same sub.

I'm not very concerned about getting a sound so loud that I rattle my panels. I just want more low-end than the four speakers are giving me right now.

st1264 I like JL Audio subs for their great sound and excellent sensitivity (don't need a big amp to run them). I've always opted for the 10", 12" or the 13" (no longer available but were fantastic). Check this one out:

To be honest, I don't think you'll fit much of a subwoofer in that enclosure. If it only fits a 6.5" sub you'll be disappointed at the output. I strongly suggest you take some measurements. Also match the sub recommended wattage to your amp's output.

Jeffreybomb I can't mount that inside the console, though.

smolder I grabbed a Pyle PLBASS8 thinking it would surely fit under my seat and that I could return it for the ten if I needed it. No need for what I do (listen to rock and roll loud). In fact I ended up turning it down a bit - I like tight bass, not rattling license plates. I couldn't be happier.

Worthwhile 8" Subs?

I picked up a Tuffy Subwoofer Security Console. I'm looking for subwoofer recommendations. It fits an 8" sub.

I normally prefer ordering from Crutchfield, so a few links from that site would be appreciated.
