BirminghamTJ Haven't don't much lately, but thinking about the future of this Jeep.

I've got a few plans in mind, all taking entirely different directions.

A: Save some of the mods for the future and give myself an "allowance" for this Jeep. This plan is assuming that I purchase a new Rubicon in a couple of years, depending on how they update. (I do NOT want an 8 speed, I DO want a diesel, and I don't want it to become much more "aerodynamic," that's not the point of buying a Jeep.

I do however, love the fact that Rubicons come with factory lockers and more space in the wheel well. I'd like to do most of my upgrading to a new one.

Upgrades I'd like if purchasing a new wrangler for this purpose:
-Coilover suspension... I like the Rebel off Road bolt on system, but I really love the Genright epic system... I know, they're expensive and overkill, but I like overkill with the exception of hight.

Downside would be that I'd be afraid of doing too much of the work myself because of the ESP, ABS, and TPMS in the newer rigs. Also all the electronics under the hood would make it difficult for me to do my own engine swap if I decided to undergo such a task.

Plan B: Get a new one as a "Street rig" and mod this one out the rear end with some of the better mods I've seen, such as the coilovers. D60s can wait, but if I do a LCOG setup, I'd like at least 35"-37" tires and I'd rather spend my money once and upgrade a yoke once in a while if I break anything, rather than spending my time fixing shafts, R&P, etc. So Axles are definitely going to need a "refresh." This jeep being a TJ, I'd eventually like to do a stretch on it, but let's just leave that for later (Not sure I'll need it/or if I even want it yet)

Plan C: Don't buy a new jeep. Instead just upgrade this through the veins and possibly get a car to share DD with and to haul passengers, as I have removed the soft top and back seat, in favor of storage and convenience.

Lets just say I dunno what I want to do here. So, after some wheeling and a spartan for the rear, I'll make more decisions as far as what I want when I wheel.

BirminghamTJ Since I last updated, I have put a spot light on the roof! =]

Down side is that the thing sounds like a tornado siren going down the highway. The wind whistles on the heat sink, so I had to add some foam inserts to stop the vibes, may try to make some sort of wind break as well.

BTW: Installing this light bar, a storm hit. I am pretty sure the weather man said 70mph straight line winds... I felt like I was installing this in a hurricane. I was excited though, so yeehaa! Hang on for dear life with one hand and wrench with the other!

I agree, I think I want to end with 35s, if i went d60's I would probably keep them full width, but wait until I have both of them before installing. Personally, I am just afraid of breaking stuff. I'd much rather fix an axle at home, than repair it on the trail, ya know? It's a long time down the road, so Im sure it will change. haha

From experience, don't upgrade parts you intend to dump! Be patient, and save your money. FWIW, if 35s are your ultimate goal, d60s may be a bit overkill. Are you planning to narrow them or leave them full width?

Great start to a build thread! I'll be starting one for my 01 Sahara soon!

BirminghamTJ Washed her today and did a ton of electrical work... I didn't realize exactly how long it would take to wire up 4 lights haha... More pictures in the next post.

BirminghamTJ So save for a junkyard d60 for the front axle...a long time from now, or get a spartan for the rear now? Any votes?

Thanks! All stock Sahara under there. Open D44 and same D30 with 3.73s, and a manual tranny. Honestly, I can't even drive an auto anymore. Haha

Just put a smittybilt cargo net and installed my parts for the bikini top. I've got a serious case of spring fever!

Build Thread Update

So I got my roof rack and bumper in, as well as some nick nack stuff.

I spent god knows how much time tinkering with this rack. My only disappointment was that it didn't come with longer Grade 5 bolts for the rear bumper, so a visit to home depot will be in my near future.

Forgive the darkness, and the setting. I was a little excited to take some pictures.

Here the body armor bumper (Unexpected purchase.)

Here's some camo netting that I installed, but I'm not all that satisfied with it.


More pictures will come soon.

I just ordered some lights, switches, relays, wiring, a windjammer, windshield light mounts, a header whatever for the bikini top, a smittybuilt c.res, and some better camo netting to attach to the c.res. Hopefully she will look pretty awesome this summer!

I am currently running on a BB. You could run 33x10.50s fine, with a tiny but of rubbing, but noting bad. Mostly in the rear. I think you'll need some aftermarket wheels though.

-Maybe a Body Armor Cargo Basket
-Trail Doors
-swing away tire carrier
-a real lift kit, may 4.5" - 6" (With necessary mods, sye, cv shafts, etc)
-A ton of lights (I'm afraid of the dark)
-a cargo net for the roll cage
-a bigger alternator
-some elockers or air lockers
-Arched tube fenders (Metalcloak with the 6" flare)
-Rear tube fenders
-d60s front and rear
-4.88-5.13 gears
-35" tires... Probably sticking with Nittos
-quick disconnects
-heavy duty steering components
-larger disk brakes (Probably with the d60s)
-more to come!

What lift if any are you currently running with those 33x12.50's??? I've got a 98 Sahara with a 2" BB and want to run 33 x 10.50's.

2001 Sahara Build Tread

So, it's been a journey, but all-in-all it's just begging. I decided to create a build thread for my TJ Sahara, for my own record of my progress, and for anyone else interested.



A little background on the Jeep:
I purchased her this past year from a lot that was planning to auction it off. I wasn't planning to get it, but had always wanted one, so I jumped. She came from a family of Wranglers, and this was one of their 5. She was quite dirty, but after cleaning her up, she looked better than I thought. (The engine compartment looked brand new, too) She only had a budget boost and an aftermarket front bumper at the time... soon to change.
