kawa001 Yep, it's closed until at least 4/7. I found out the hard way on Wednesday. My wife and I went to make a midnight run and found locked gates. We were coming back from Hburg so it wasn't too much of a loss.

Yes we will definitely get out soon!
I am not going to complain that my Saturday morning is now open for some fishing though

smileguy49 I just got off the phone with the forest service and they informed me that the trail system is still closed, and they really do not know when it will get opened back up. We need to wait till the snow melts then they can do a trail survey and if it is not too muddy they will open it (definitely not this weekend). If the trail is still too wet they will hold off till it dries out some. You can call the ranger station to check the status 540-984-4101.

So with the bummer news is that we will not be able to hit Peters Mill my plan B was going to be a flagpole trip. With snow on flagpole I will not be able to make it. My stock sahara with highway tires does great on the trails but not in snow! If anyone would like to put together a Flagpole trip feel free to do so. I am sorry the weather screwed things up, but I promise we will get out plenty of times once it warms up a little.

goonie1 Buzzkill... Closed for next 2 weekends. Check here for current status:

Still supposed to be nice weather this week, 50s to 60s and sunny!

Just cross your fingers and toes and arms and legs and anything else you can cross and hope that it isn't closed lol. Where can you find out if it is closed?

My plan B for if Peters mill doesnt reopen in time was going to be Flagpole, but with the snow I am unsure if Flagpole is a good idea for me. My jeep is still stock and has highway tires, so it doesnt do the greatest in snow.

Dont be discouraged by this statement, I doubt anyone will get stuck, but if they do we have plenty of equipment to get you out
Should be a great time.
Yeah, woah! didn't say I recommend bald tires!

It is a fun trail, for sure. Just trying to put people's minds at ease, not discourage!

Can someone post the address of the meeting place so i can put it in the GPS?

This is the "101" trail of the GWNF system, IMO.

smileguy49 Lets just call it 10:00am at the Shell station off I-81 exit 279. Come a few mins early to gas up and buy your permits
03-22-2013 09:14 AM
goonie1 Either time is fine by me, I would prefer 10 though.

Unfortunately I have a crazy schedule and need to get home by 1 or 1:30. Peters Mill is about 1.5 hours long taking some short breaks, and Taskers Gap takes about 1 hour.

Reaper2332 Peter's Mill is a fun family run. Its about 1-3 hours depending in how slow you go and how many times you stop for pictures. I think any stock Jeep would be fine on the trail, I have seen stock explorers and silverados out there. Don't forget to get your permits though, they are 5 bucks and you can get them from the Exxon and family convenience store in Edinburg.

goonie1 Thanks for the info, I think he'll be alright, he has a little shorter wheelbase and 9in ish clearance.

I have heard the IFS makes it quite a bit less capable offroad but it still has decent clearance and approach/departure angles... Don't think I would ask him to try flagpole but if we end up there as a second resort he can always hop in my JK and go along for a ride :-)
I run a stock JKU sahara with highway tires. My clearance is listed at 10.5" but I do air down, so I lose some of that. The trail is really quite easy, but there are a few spots that if I am not carful I do touch one of my skid plates. Also there are a few sections where you drive over softball sized rocks for a while. I am sure it would make it just fine, but in the end it comes down to the driver and how they handle the trail.

gyramax Since this will be a long weekend, I'm considering, depending on weather, coming up Friday, the 29th and doing Flagpole, camping somewhere near Switzer Friday night and meeting up with everyone for Peters Mill Saturday.
Anyone ineterested, come along. Would not plan on Flagpole before 10am Friday morning .

Also, on the carajeep, anyway you could go one more exit at Manassas/Sudley Road? We could meet in the parking lot by Wendy's. if we do the rest stop I have to go all the way to Centreville to double back. Sob, sob, whine, whine.

I plan on coming along as well in a stock JKS. Possibly another jeep. I'm coming from chantilly/fairfax area so if you guys meet up in the manassas area I would like to Join the jeepavan :-)
