RDD I have been through Broad Run several times and me and my wife with another couple may do it this Saturday the 17th and anywhere else in the area that is not going to tear up something.I have a 4" Suspension lift and 33's but I'm not into rock crawling or real rough stuff in my Jeep for that I take my Side X Side to West Va...lol But anyways if anyone wants to hook up this Saturday I live in Blacksburg & the other couple lives in Salem so just trying to plan something for this Saturday.Shoe Creek sounds interesting but not sure if we want to drive that far.

pcwolf, i'd be there in a heartbeat, BUT memorial day weekend is a chance to see my family in the midwest, and i cannot pass it up for the world.

I look forward to wheeling with you in the future pcwolf. I will be at spring fling at the cove, 6/13-6/15

I'd be willing to do a trail run, I'm pretty much stock though other than the two inch lift. As long as its stock friendly I'm down.

Tjdude08 Anytime. Yea that first part is my favorite. If you disconnect it's very easy. But it's a fun little trail if you're bored.

So I went up bobletts gap today and that is probably my new favorite trail. That begining part was really rough and I actually had to go in 4 low. I would say that section through there is a little risky fot stock rigs unless your very careful but after the trail intersects with the parkway it gets real easy. Thanks so much for the suggestion!

Ridge Runner 99 i live close to there and ride up once in a while. its not as fun as it used to be. dont know if the fire tower is still there. they put up a gate so youd have to walk up to it. i may do that next time i go.
03-27-2013 07:58 PM
Getyourwings383 I'll be up there again soon once the snow melts. once I get up there I'll be sure to check everything out a little more closely.
03-27-2013 07:46 PM
jaredsjeep Yep, that gate sounds familiar. Beyond that gate a decent ways is the fire observation tower and some more trails if I remember right (sounds all closed up though).
03-27-2013 06:21 PM
Getyourwings383 I actually didn't take the picture my girlfriend did, I didn't get a good look down the hill but she said she didn't see it but with the snow it may still be there just outta sight. There was a gated portion at the far end of the road if that's what your talking about its still there and no problem about the picture thanks for the tip about the trail its an awesome view up there!
03-27-2013 06:06 PM
jaredsjeep I seem to remember there being an old Toyota 4Runner at the bottom of that power line right of way in the picture a long time ago. Did you see an old rusted out body of a truck down in that hole. It has to be more than a thousand feet down in there so I have no idea how they could get it out.

Bummer to hear that they have all the trails blocked off now. The Glenvar side used to be rutted out, dirt, and steep so it may still be fun. I seem to remember a lot of side motorcycle trails off of that section but I bet they are blocked off now too. Can you still climb the old fire observation tower at the far end of the road?

Thanks for the pictures. Brings back good memories.

Getyourwings383 Sorry about the same three pictures phone glitched.
03-27-2013 05:43 PM
Getyourwings383 Well I just checked out the trail up there and I didn't try to go down the glenvar side because there is still a lot of snow and I didn't wanna risk it alone. Just so you guys know I think all the trails around the towers now are gated off with no trespassing. You can still get up to the big tower (awesome view with the recent snow btw) but pretty much everything else seemed closed off.
03-27-2013 12:57 PM
Getyourwings383 Ohhh okay, I know exactly where that is now. I've never ridden poor mountain road out before but that seems easy enough directions. Thanks a ton!
03-27-2013 12:49 PM
vtjohn From the Back Creek area, turn on Tinsley then Poor Mountain Rd. It becomes gravel near the top and the entire Glenvar side is gravel/dirt. You'll come out near the Dixie Caverns area. There are a lot of signs saying not to leave the road when I was up there 6 months ago, but there are a few trails that go off around the towers.

Last Summer from beneath the big tower:

Getyourwings383 Can you tell me how to get up to that trail on poor mountain? I live in the cave spring area and if i can get there by going up bent mountain that would be a lot closer than driving up to catawba. I normally ride the trails around 311 so I'm familiar with that area.
03-27-2013 05:40 AM
jaredsjeep I used to live in Roanoke when I had my last Jeep and we would always go up on Poor Mountain. I lived near there so it was pretty convenient. From what I remember, there was a fun fire road up the back side of the mountain on a road called Brake Road off of 460 that got you to the top (or come up gravel road from Bent Mountain off of 221. Once up there, there is a gravel road that links up all the towers up there but there were several trails to the side with some fun mud holes and such. That was almost 20 years ago so I am not sure what it is like up there now or if they have no trespassing signs up or anything like that now though. Maybe ask around about that.

We would also go to some trails off of 311 out in Catawba. I can't remember too much about that but it may be the same mentioned above. Some fun stuff there also. I hope that helps!

Getyourwings383 Thanks a ton! I'm going to try and check it out this weekend.

Tjdude08 Alright so when you get to Montvale turn left after the library onto goose creek valley rd. After you go under RR tracks goose creek goes right. You need to stay straight on pile rd. follow it a miles. Make sure you're paying attention because there's a spot where it look like it goes straight but pile rd actually bears left. Just stay on pike rd. you should see an electrical box with a green and white skull on it. You're getting close. Still a couple more miles to go but pay attention because bobblets gap is on the left in a right turn. Get on bobblets and follow it for maybe 2 miles. You'll get to a fork in the road, there should be a sign pointing right for lost trail rd, stay left. Kinda goes up ad to the left. After that you'll come to a driveway with a couple junk cars it's to the left just before. That's the trail. Enjoy.

Getyourwings383 Thanks id appreciate it! I went up to Catawba yesterday and drove around up there on some forest roads and had a ball myself.
03-25-2013 01:04 PM
Tjdude08 Ill try and get you some directions cause its kinda hard to find. But you'd definitely have a good time. We just went yesterday when It was snowing
03-25-2013 12:37 PM
Getyourwings383 Nice I'm definitely going to check that one out thanks for the tip!
03-25-2013 12:33 PM
Tjdude08 Takes you over the mountain under the parkway into Buchanan
03-25-2013 12:30 PM
Tjdude08 Off of bobblets gap rd. it's in the area near the tankers
03-25-2013 12:22 PM
